Photo Hike

Hey Everyone,

Looks like Saturday will be doable for a photo hike; off hand, there is no rain but it will be cloudy. I wanted to schedule this hike to see if people were interested.

We will meet just slightly before sunrise (6:47am) on this morning to take a photo hike at the Mt. Vernon trail. I include pertinent details about my photo hikes in the Message Board Discussion page of this group.

The hike is planned to go down the Mt. Vernon and Dyke Marsh trails to catch photos of the surrounding scenery in the morning. We will have views of the river, cityscapes, wildlife and plant life to work with, as well as any ideas sourced from the crowd. In addition we hope to have a good hike in. It will be approximately four miles, with return loop to catch anything we missed or check out new angles.

Per the discussion page, hikers will provide and be responsible for your own photo equipment. Also, we ask that kids are not brought on the hike.

Here is the planned route (Note the route change):

Updates to come if weather changes. I have provided the closest address above, but we are meeting at the Belle Haven Rest Stop.

If anybody is seeing this I am still at Mt. Vernon trail. I will be until about 7:15am. If nobody shows by then I will have to head back.

I planned for going to a book sale at that time. The plan was to get my hike in at 6 today.

Sorry, as I said I was at the wrong place. I tried to post at about 5:30AM giving you my cell # so I could try and figure out how to get to where you were, but looks like earlier comment never got posted!

No problem. The map I drew and linked in the description was good, but the map address on the meetup took people to Memorial Street elsewhere in town. It does not appear your comment was posted. I will try for a post mortem on the discussion board.

Though I was hoping matters in need of attention could wait, they can't so I will have to pass this time. I hope you all have a good time and get to take some awesome photos!

I have an old, slow, quiet dog. would he be able to accompany me?

Can it make 4 miles? If so, we should be good. A brief search on the rules of the park shows no restrictions on animals.

If I weren't going out late Friday night, I'd be there in a heartbeat Ian... :) sky

Hello guys, just wanted to alert you that the Dyke Marsh folks are having its Clean Up of the Marsh that morning (think around 8 am). Meaning a little more commotion for wildlife to stay put... On the other hand, looks like the Osprey Pair living by the slanted pole by the Marina now have eggs/hatchling in the nest. That would make for a breathtaking shot.

No Ian, you don't need permits, etc. especially if the group is small. In fact on any other day your time is perfect because that's when most birds and wildlife come alive. Just anticipate a little more human action at the Marsh that day, which could be a deterrent. Leesylvania State Park and other areas by the Occoquan may be good alternatives as the Spring migration (Ospreys, Blue Birds, etc.) continues to settle.

Great idea! Finally some fellow early birds who want to be out and about during the magic hour. I just took my first photography class and need lots of practice.

This sounds really interesting. I recently bought a new camera and would love to test it out. Will check to see if I can attend.
