Hey Super Troopers!!!
For this walk, we'll be going back to one of our favorite trails...yes, yours and mine! And I truly love coming back to Mason Neck during the hottest, meanest days of summer! Oh yeah, because the park is nearly surrounded by water, it's a high humidity area too! So with the heat and humidity, this is going to be a great workout!!! We're going to need the greatest motivational song in the history of the world...
Risin' up straight to the top...had the guts, got the glory...went the distance...now I'm not gonna stop....just a man and his will to survive...it's the eye of the tiger...it's the thrill of the fight...risin' up to the challenge of our rival....and he's watching us all with the eye of tiger...the eye of the tiger...the eye of the tiger!!!
Mason Neck is beautifully alive, yet wonderfully silent. In Lorton, it's peacefully hidden away from the rest of the world. We know about it cuz we've been here many times before over the years. Others aren't aware of it probably cuz it's isolated on a peninsula surrounded by Pohick Bay, the Potomac, and Belmot Bay and only accessible by one lonely country road.
The park's mature hardwood forest, wetlands, and shoreline are home to friendly herons, swans, ducks, as well as osprey, hawks, bald eagles and other birds of prey. For us non-flying creatures, the park invites us to enjoy its diverse ecosystem via its extensive trail system.
To get the most of your $4 entrance free and to get a great workout, we're going to mix it up. We'll begin with a moderate hike through a hardwood forest, then we'll walk through some very lush wetlands, and lastly, we'll take an an easy, breezy, beautiful stroll along the shores of the Potomac River! --So what's not to love about this hike?!!!
This will be our usual two-hour walk (5.5 miles of smiles). The trails are a mix of pavement, earth, and boardwalk. I dunno, overall pretty easy in my opinion, if you can handle the heat and the humidity :)
How to get there: Take Exit 166A onto VA 7100 S/Fairfax County Parkway (1.3 miles), take VA-611/Telegraph Rd (~3 miles), take a left onto VA 242 E/Gunston Rd/VA-600 (3.7 miles), slight right onto High Point Rd (2.4 miles), continue to the meetup point...
Where to meetup: the Visitor's Center parking lot. Once you pass the entrance station, proceed right at the fork and follow the signs to the Visitor's Center.
What to bring: yourself, your furry friend, water, 4.00 USD, and cool sunglasses!!! As always, if you're going to be late, lost, or just want to say hello, my# is (301) 712-5880.
Hope you'll come to the dance!!
