Hey Super Troopers!!!
Bienvenidos to all the new kids in the group! You should know, I was once new like you. My friend dragged me to my very first meetup event ever with this group. Back then, I really thought the idea of going into the woods with a bunch of strangers was the most insane thing I've ever heard of! In the parking lot, my friend and I stood around very much confused and nervous, and ready to ditch until a very lovely and beautiful girl comes up to us and says: "Are you two with the Alexandria Walking Group?" --That was Dec. 2007. Today, I'm your fearless (and favorite) organizer!
For this walk/hike we'll be visiting our old friend, the Bull Run Occoquan Trail. As you might recall, this heavily-forested trail starts at Bull Run Regional Park and extends for 18 beautiful miles to Fountainhead Regional Park right in the middle of suburbia sprawl. The trail basically follows the flow of the Bull Run stream and the Occoquan River to the Potomac. We'll enter the trail at the Bull Run Marina section.
This section of the BROT straddles the waters of the Occoquan Reservoir and winds along the wooded hillsides and courses in-and-out of somewhat steep ravines that filter and funnel water into the reservoir. The hills and ravines are nothing too tough or anything we can't handle with relish! Along the way, we'll mostly pass under tall oak and hemlock trees, which gives the forest a very lovely, dark, and deep feel and will provide us shade relief from the August sun. Btw..if you're into fishing, the Occoquan Reservoir is known for its largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish and northern pike.
As usual, this out-and-back walk/hike will be about 2-hours (5-miles of smiles). I dunno, I'd say it's a moderate hike. The trail is completely natural surface.
How to Get There: From Fairfax County Parkway head south on VA 643/Lee Chapel Road (1 mile), take a right onto VA 123/Ox Road (1.1 miles), and turn left onto Henderson (5.1 miles). Be careful for your final turn--a sharp left onto Old Yates (0.8 miles). The parking lot will be on your left.
What to bring: yourself, your furry friend, water, and cool sunglasses! As always, if have questions, lost, or going to be late, please call me at (301) 712-5880.
Hope you'll come to the dance!
