Fall Camping Trip

Ok folks, it's time to go camping again! Anyone that joined us in June can attest that we had a great time! Autumn is upon us...so on this trip we'll enjoy the cooler temps and beautiful foliage. This time we reserved a group camp site so we can party together!

The Campground
Sherando lake recreation area is in the eastern section of George Washington National Forest, off I-64 between Stauntan and Charlottesville. The campground sits between Sherando Lake and Upper Sherando Lake at an elevation of about 1,800 feet. The larger of the two encompasses 25 acres of cool waters. Both lakes are fed by the South Fork Back Creek and both offer great opportunities for fishing (license required). The larger one boasts a sandy beach to relax on; although it may be a little too chilly for swimming, kayaking is an available option.

The Hiking
There are several short (some easy, some more difficult) trails around the lakes and the immediate area that people can enjoy on their own anytime after arriving on Saturday. There's also fishing, kayaking, and simply relaxing on the beach as other things to fill your day.

On Sunday, there will be a 9 mile loop hike for those interested. We'll pack up the campsite after some breakfast and head out. There's a couple steep climbs but we'll be rewarded with some fabulous views. We will stop somewhere along the way to enjoy our lunch. If you'd like to explore the area on your own, you can do that as well.

Dinner and the campfire
We'll need a big feast to give us energy for our Sunday hike. We will do it pot luck style. Please bring your favorite side dish to share. We will bring some dogs and chicken as well as some s'mores fixins. Don't forget your beverage of choice!

Notes
* please post in the comments if you don't own a tent and need space in a tent. I will send a recommended packing list to all confirmed campers
* we will meet at Vienna fairfax metro station for carpooling
* the cost is $5.00 per person and can be paid in cash to an organizer upon arrival
* please email me with any questions; on the day of, you can reach me at[masked]

Can't say enough about the quality of people, the organization of the trip, and the camping trip location. Thanks to all those who organized the trip! The view of the stars on such a clear night was amazing; the creator of the universe did the heavens absolutely right! Great trip!

Cassie's super awesome... (*Albert decided to "keep the flame" remotely from the comfort of his home during this event). Everyone was fun-loving with colorful personalities. The 1st night was so gorgeous I could see the Milkyway in person (and not through a screen-saver!). The weather was sorta bipolar the 2nd day but it was absolutely no bother! I had so much fun with star-gazing, great conversation, yummy chestnuts on an open fire, fun Sparklers, decadent Smores, delicious Feast under a billion stars, and a really cute basset-hound with a name I can't pronounce!... In sum, I am happy I had a chance to get to know genuinely kind phenomenal people in a well-maintained campground with clean bathrooms! Seriously, those folks who often canceled at the last minute or just decided to "no-show" should be more considerate to these organizers 'cuz they invested tons of efforts and energy into putting these events together, to include reserving "your spot" with their personal fund. My2cents!

There's an interesting place not far from Sherando Lake: Polyface Farm, a super-organic experiment in sustainable farming (www.polyfacefarms.com). I'm planning to visit it, either on the way to the campground or after we've set up camp. Others are welcome to join me.

Hey Albert - If you need for someone to drive, then I can drive. If you don't need anyone to drive, then since I live out west in Herndon, then I can either meet you somewhere along I-66 or meet you there on Saturday. Just let me know. Thanks!,
