Mount Vernon Trail - Fort Hunt to Riverside Park

Let’s take a walk along Mount Vernon Drive!

Yeah, I know it's short notice, but the 50% chance of rain forecasted earlier has dropped to just a slight chance of showers in the afternoon, so a Saturday morning walk beckons...

The route: From Fort Hunt, we’ll walk east along Fort Hunt Road, exit the park, and walk south on the Mount Vernon Trail to Riverside Park and return.

The walk is 1.9 miles each way for a total of 3.8 miles and should take no more than an hour and a half at a moderate pace (3 mph). The surface is paved pathways throughout.

Where to meet: We'll meet in the first picnic area inside Fort Hunt.

How to get there:

From US Route 1/Richmond Highway, turn onto VA-626/ Sherwood Hall Lane and drive east for 0.5 miles. Turn right on VA-628/Parkers Lane and follow it as it becomes VA-628/Collingwood Road, about 1.4 miles. Turn right on Hunt Road and follow it for about a mile, then turn left to continue along Fort Hunt Road for another 0.7 miles. The entrance to Fort Hunt Park will be on your right.

From GW Parkway, take the exit for Fort Hunt Park/Fort Hunt Road. (If you are coming from the south, you will go through a tunnel under GW Parkway.) Stay on Fort Hunt Road until you see a sign for the entrance to Fort Hunt Park on the left.

In the park, stay to your right past a white wood frame building until you get to a stop sign at a T-junction. The parking lot is to your right, and the picnic area we will assemble at is directly in front of you. (GPS =[masked], [masked])

What to bring: Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired. Sunscreen is probably a good idea.

Administrative stuff: There are restrooms and water fountains at both Fort Hunt and Riverside Park.

Note that the GW Parkway is closed to automobile traffic from Old Town to Mt. Vernon between 6 - 11 am for a foot race (actually, reopens when the last runner passes Mt. Vernon, so could be earlier). Your best bet is either taking Ft. Hunt Rd all the way down from Belle Haven or Rte. 1 to Sherwood Hall Ln and cut over to Ft. Hunt Rd.

Folks, my apologies. I live in the Ft. Hunt area and saw signs regarding the closure and thought it was for tomorrow. Now, online it says 10/7, which should be Sunday. However, there was also an error on that same page where they said Friday was 10/6, so I can't say with certainty until I drive down the parkway later today. Sorry if this was a false alarm, but it may be a safe bet to plan two routes for getting to the park just in case.

Thanks Terrie. My bad, sorry for raising a false alarm.

Does anyone know if there is a good place to lock up a bike at the park, thinking of riding there from my house.

They have several Pavillions in the park and I'd guess a bike rack or two. It is hard to remember seeing bike racks as I was on foot, but I think it's a safe bet you'll find a spot to lock up.
