With the chilly weather upon us, let’s stay out of the wind and within easy reach of a cup of hot coffee during a walk around the south side of Old Town Alexandria!
The route: From across the street from the King Street Station parking lot, we’ll walk south and east along the side streets of Old Town Alexandria to Jones Point, north along the waterfront to King Street, and back along Union, Wilkes, and Duke Streets to return to our starting point. The walk is 5 miles of sidewalks and paved paths, so we should be finished in around 2 hours.
Where to meet: We'll meet in the open area across from the King Street Station parking lot, 1800 Diagonal Road, Alexandria, VA, GPS =[masked],-77.060621. (In front of Joe Theismann's.)
How to get there:
- Metro: King Street Station is on the Blue and Yellow Lines.
- Driving: From I-395, take VA-7 / King Street east about 2.8 miles. Take the first right after passing under the railroad (Daingerfield Street), and an immediate right onto Diagonal Road. From US-1 / Richmond Highway (either direction), follow King Street west 0.5 miles, take a sharp left onto Daingerfield, and the first right onto Diagonal Road.
What to bring: Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired.
- Parking: There is a lot of free street parking nearby. North of the Metro Station along Cedar Street, Commonwealth, and Sunset Drive is usually a good bet if there isn't anything east of the railroad tracks.
- Amenities: Starbuck’s and June’s Coffee are adjacent to our starting point for a pitstop and a hot coffee while we assemble. Along the route, there are restrooms and drinking fountains at Jones Point Park and the Torpedo Factory.
After the walk: There are a LOT of places within easy walking distance for a lunch get-together afterwards! Here's a couple of close ones:
