*** Rescheduled to 2/17/13***
Hey Super Troopers!!!
For our next walk, we'll be going to Vienna...no, not the one in Austria! Although some of the best days of my life took place there. I was young, wild, and free and I'll never forget the great warmth and friendliness of Theresa, Simona, and Andrea. I tell ya, a lot of life just depends on luck and the kindness of strangers... -- If you've never been to Vienna, Austria you should visit!
A brief history for you: W&OD Railroad Regional Park takes its name from the railroad whose trains ran along the right-of-way from 1859 until 1968. As you might have suspected from the dates, the railroad was destroyed during the Civil War. It was rebuilt and eventually acquired by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.
Today, the abandoned railroad right-of-way has become a 100-foot wide trail, which is the the skinniest park in the Commonwealth of Virginia, but also one of the longest (45 miles in length). It extends from Alexandria to Purcellville, in Loudoun County. It's a favorite of avid bikers and skaters, and walkers too, of course!
Our out-and-back walk will be our usual 2 hours (6 miles of smiles). We'll begin at the Vienna Community Center and walk towards the Hunter Mill Road, then retrace our steps. The trail is pavement and flat. Just easy, breezy, beautiful.
How to get there: Take I-66 West to Exit 62. Merge onto VA-243 N/Nutley Street SW. Go 0.7 miles and turn right onto Courthouse Rd SW. Go 0.6 miles, then take a slight right onto Locust St SW. Turn right onto Center St S. Then the 1st left onto Cherry St SE.
What to bring: yourself, your furry friend, water, and cool sunglasses!!! For legal liability purposes, no one under 18, please. As always, if you have questions, get lost, or just want to say hello, my number is (301) 712-5880.
Hope you'll come to the dance!
