Farm Power - turning manure into a source of energy and economic renewal

Kevin Maas of the Skagit County renewable energy company, Farm Power will speak at the January 21, 2010 meeting. Refer to their website for more details at http://www.farmpower....
Farm Power’s Rexville, WA anaerobic dairy digester transforms cow manure into both a source of electricity and a source of economic vitality for the region’s agricultural community. The dairy digester is capable of producing up to 750 kilowatts of electricity from burning the captured methane – or approximately the energy needed to power 500 homes – and will provide electricity to PSE’s Green Power Program. With more than 24,000 participating PSE customers, the Green Power Program is among the largest of the nation’s 600 similar efforts.
“Our Rexville dairy digester is the result of many state, community and business leaders coming together to help turn our vision of a renewable energy facility into a new source of opportunities for Skagit County farmers,” said Kevin Maas. “Plus we reduce greenhouse gas emissions by thousands of tons per year.”

Please join us for our first meeting of the new year, we look forward to seeing you there.

It couldn't get any more exciting than this. Thank you, Kevin. It was great to have met you. Time has changed. What we're experiencing is a rebirth of a new world order that is characterized by optimism and the power of the human mind. The interplay of communities, smart government, technology and sheer guts all working together will always see the light of day. Government incentive programs and regulations are key to success.

Keven Maas's presentation makes an excellent point. Renewable energy opportunities from biogas sources like farm manure and landfills are setting a powerful incentive for a better world when the smart grid comes along. I hope I will live long enough to witness every single household being self-contained and self-sustainable and able to share excess electricity at peak demand with the rest of the country. Gone are the days when doomsayers like Thomas Malthus (food shortage), Paul Ehrlich (population time bomb), J.R. Nyquist (world war), Al Gore (global warming), Laurie Garrett (coming plague), Terry Glavin (human extinction) and James von Feldt (economic disaster) dominate our thinking. That is about to change. The interplay of communities, smart government, technology and sheer guts all working together will always see the light of day. Government incentive programs and regulations are parts of that success.

I applaud Kevin and his efforts to bring the biodigester to life in Skagit County. His story was very informative and appreciate that he was able to answer all the many questions about how it all works and the various stages of the endeavor.

Kevin's presentation was thorough and educational. We heard about the problem (waste from cow manure) and the solution (turning the waste into electrical energy). Everyone was engaged and and had a great opportunity to network with each other before and after the speakers.
