Ballard Sun, Wind + Fire Project Proposal

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • Seattle Renewables sponsors an event (more like hosts) to put up a solar array on a Ballard Fire Station. Using Chris Marshall's alliance as the core team, SR fund-raises the seed capital. Seattle City Light, DOE, USDA and ARRA have grant/stimulus money already allocated. From the Seattle Times headlines: "600 passionate Seattle Renewables Meetup members donate $100 each, fund ground-breaking community solar pilot project. They challenged Sustainable Ballard to match or beat their investment. Seeing the gauntlet thrown, Wallingford Solar put up the money for a 75kw solar array at Seattle Tilth / Good Shepherd Center. Washington-based Silicon Energy gave each fully qualified 75kw community energy project a 9% bulk discount in exchange for prime publicity events. But it was the Ballard Fire House project that started it all."

I'll promote it if Chris Marshall take the business lead. I pledge the first $100.

I'm looking for a group to advance local renewable energy systems like low impact tidal power collectors, and also to study and apply energy concepts explored by shauberger and Tesler.

I'd like to extend RPL's referral program to members- we often donate $0.10 per DCW to charities or NGO projects for commercial solar opportunities brought our way. Pricing for commercial grade PV For systems:[masked]kW the price is $3.35 per DCW. 101kW- 250kW - $3.20,[masked]kW $3, 501kW-1MW $2.75. Want your system installed on steel solar canopies with a 20 year structural warranty? add $0.75 per DCW. Thanks all! Michael.

Michael, I appreciate the rough pricing info. for another potential project I am working on, in the very early stages. Working with SunPower for pricing right now and would be glad to discuss with you when we get a bit further along. I have your number. As for this project, Chris Marshall is in OR, working on his cabin. Without a champion to lead, and a champion at the govt. level, it is all talk. Having led, I know how much work it is. Any leaders?

What is happening with this project now? Have you guys been watching Seattle's Climate Action Plan?

Ok, before we go to much farther with this in wafting Chris Marshall's name about. Let's make sure his time and interest is being spent on this project. As far as an "event" hatched by myself, I'm not sure where that came from?! It would be really nice if this discussion was broached in part at our Monthly gatherings, so that we could have some "face time." Ya'll have my phone # if you want more clarification.

Michael (RA Power) and Jeff (Wolton): this is Meetup is not yet an actual event, it's an idea hatched by Bill Aston and others at Seattle Renewables. It's best to see it as "if we have enough interest we will meet up in person to flesh it out further". I think that discussing the actual RE devices, rates, paybacks and possible installers is premature. There are 10 people signed up so far, and some have already pledged $100. If we can get 20 pledges at $100 each, we have a group that is serious about getting it done. Then we need serious interest from a fire station that wants it on their roof, then we can discuss specific devices and pricing. Until we have demand, we are putting the cart before the horse, IMO. - Aaron Campbell

Jeff- There is a $5000 annual rebate cap on PV systems from the WA Production-Based Incentive (PBI). It only sounds "MASSIVE" on a per kWh basis- In reality, this incentive only serves to distort solar economics and the price of small systems. This is why solar is (trying) to be sold for $6, $8 and even $10 per DCW here in the State. The market price for utility-grade PV in the real world for 100kW + commercial systems is closer to $3 and that is using higher performance modules than those made in WA. RA POWER & LIGHT will design / build a 100kW system in for $3 per DCW with an insurance backed annual production guaranty for 10 years. This system will still produce the $5000 per year- albeit at a lower per kWh basis. A 30kW PV system in WA will max out the State incentive. Any system larger gains nothing in incentives.

I'm in for $100, and I suggest we open it up to any fire station. Jeff, the event is vague because we've been waiting for you to spearhead it!

Which fire house in Ballard? I'd put in $100 and see if any other Sustainable Ballard folks are interested. Andrea (it won't completely wipe out my social security check...)
