On May 14, the Sustainable Energy Coalition - in cooperation with Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Caucuses - will host the 12th annual Congressional Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency EXPO + Forum.��

��

This year���s EXPO will bring together more than fifty businesses, sustainable energy industry trade associations, government agencies, and energy policy research organizations to showcase the status and near-term potential of the cross-section of renewable energy (biofuels/biomass, geothermal, solar, water, wind) and energy efficiency technologies (see examples below).��

��

Members of the U.S. Congress will offer welcoming remarks in the morning while afternoon speakers will discuss the role sustainable energy technologies can play in meeting America���s energy needs.

��

As Congress, the Administration, the business community, environmental advocates, and American voters search for options to address ways to stimulate the economy, ���green jobs,��� higher energy costs, increased reliance on energy imports, and the potential threat posed by rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions, the EXPO will help address the role that sustainable energy technologies might play.��

��

This will include not only the technical aspects of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies but also related issues such as economics, jobs potential, environmental benefits, current and near-term market potential, model programs in the public and private sectors, and institutional, financial and legal barriers.

The EXPO is free, open to the public, and no RSVPs are required.

. . . . that renewable energy sources provided nearly 10% of both domestic energy production and U.S. electrical generation in 2008 with non-hydro renewable electricity expanding by 17.6% over the previous year; renewable energy will account for about a third of new electricity capacity added to the U.S. grid over the next three years.

. . . . that U.S. wind power grew by 50% in 2008 and accounted for 42% of all new power generation in the United States last year; wind energy could supply at least 20% of U.S. electricity needs by 2030 while avoiding 7.6 cumulative gigatons of carbon dioxide.

. . . . that grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) capacity increased 58% in 2008 and solar water heating capacity increased 40%; the PV industry today is 10 times larger than 1998 and likely to grow by 50% annually in the coming years; solar thermal plants covering an area equal to 9% of Nevada could generate enough electricity to power the nation; solar power is on the verge of reaching cost parity with conventional energy sources.

. . . . that there may be more than 90,000 MW overall of untapped water potential in the United States; through new hydropower technologies, such as advanced turbines, and new applications, such as tidal, wave, ocean currents, and in-stream hydrokinetic approaches, the industry could double its output over the next 20 years.

. . . . that six million Americans are using geothermal energy in their homes ��� three million receive electricity from geothermal power plants and another three million use geothermal heat pumps to heat & cool their homes; more than 100 new geothermal power projects now under development in 13 states will more than double the county���s geothermal capacity over the next five years.

. . . . that total ethanol capacity expanded 34% and E85 stations exceeded 1,800 in 2008; the fuel now represents more than 7% of the nation���s gasoline supply and can be found in more than 70% of gasoline gallons sold in the U.S.; the 6.5 billion gallons of ethanol produced last year added $47.6 billion to the nation���s GDP; moreover, cellulosic ethanol requirements are projected to boom during the coming decade.

. . . . that biomass is presently the largest U.S. renewable energy source with more than 200 existing biopower plants now providing electricity for 1.5 million American homes; manure-to-energy biogas projects are expanding and could power up to 3% of North America���s electricity needs.

. . . . that the potential for cost-effective investments in energy efficiency across all sectors of the economy is on the order of 46 billion barrels of oil equivalent between now and 2030.

��

. . . . that by the end of 2008 energy efficiency investments had slashed United States energy consumption (as measured per dollar of economic output) to half of what it was in 1970, from 18,000 Btus to about 8,900 Btus; in one year alone such investments are estimated to have generated approximately 1.7 quads of energy savings.

��

. . . . that U.S. energy consumption could be cut by 11% by 2020 through simple building efficiency measures such as more efficient lighting, water heating, and appliances; government analyses have found that achieving 50% energy savings is possible for medium-sized retail buildings, which account for 18% of U.S. energy use.

��

. . . . that sales of Energy Star-qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) nearly doubled last year; in 2007, 290 million CFLs (which use approximately 75% less energy) were sold and now account for more than 20% of the U.S. light bulb market; furthermore, LEDs now coming into the market use five times less power than CFLs.

��

. . . . that energy efficiency improvements in the U.S. electric power sector could reduce the need for new electric generation by an additional 7 to 11 percent more than currently projected over the next two decades if key market, regulatory, and consumer barriers can be addressed; already the ratio of advanced meters to all installed meters has reached 4.7% - a significant jump from the less than 1% in 2006.

��

. . . . that Americans are now using public transit at record levels but if they used it at the same rate as Europeans ��� for roughly 10% of their daily travel needs ��� the U.S. could reduce its dependence on imported oil by more than 40%, nearly equal to the 550 million barrels of crude oil imported from Saudi Arabia each year.

��

. . . . that registrations of new hybrid vehicles rose 38% to 350,289 in 2007 and should double to 5.3% of car sales by 2012; if the U.S. switched to hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles, it could halve its gasoline use by 2035.

��

. . . . that fuel cell and hydrogen technologies continue to make inroads in the transportation and building sectors; global sales of fuel cells rose 10% last year while nine million tons of hydrogen are now being consumed annually in the U.S.; General Motors plans to have 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road in California by 2014.

. . . . that worldwide the solar thermal industry employs at least 624,000 people, the wind power industry 300,000, and the solar PV industry 170,000; more than 1 million people work in the biomass and biofuels sector while small-scale hydropower employs 39,000 individuals; and in the U.S. alone geothermal employs 25,000.

��

. . . . that a major shift to renewable energy and energy efficiency is expected to produce at least 4.2 million, and perhaps many more, new environmentally friendly ���green jobs��� over the next three decades.

��

. . . . that despite recent economic uncertainty, the three major clean-energy sectors ��� solar photovoltaics, wind power, and biofuels ��� kept up a blistering growth rate, increasing 53% from $75.8 billion in 2007 to $115.9 billion in revenues in 2008; by 2018, these three sectors will have revenues of $325.1 billion.

. . . . that there are more than 3,400 companies in the solar energy sector that employ 30,000 to 40,000 workers; it is projected to create 440,000 permanent jobs and spur $325 billion in private investment by 2016.

. . . . . that about 85,000 people are employed in the wind industry today, up from 50,000 a year ago; each megawatt of installed wind energy capacity creates 4.85 full-time jobs; wind turbine and turbine component manufacturers announced, added or expanded 70 new facilities in the past two years, including over 55 in 2008.

��. . . . that the U.S is now home to180 biorefineries in 26 states, up from just nine in 2001, generating jobs for thousands of Americans and breathing new life into rural economies; another 20 facilities are under construction, while three existing facilities are expanding.

. . . that each $100 billion invested in transportation infrastructure and in green jobs would expand the economy's annual output by about $160 billion and generate approximately 1.1 million jobs while weatherizing a million homes annually would create about 78,000 jobs.

. . . . that energy efficiency improvements in Pennsylvania alone could save consumers nearly $5 billion each year on energy bills and help create 27,000 new, local jobs by 2025.
