alt+library book club: Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

We're meeting at Coffee Garden again, huzzah!

Join us in reading Karen Russell's Swamplandia! --I so admire that exclamation point in the title...

"Thirteen-year-old Ava Bigtree has lived her entire life at Swamplandia!, her family’s island home and gator-wrestling theme park in the Florida Everglades. But when illness fells Ava’s mother, the park’s indomitable headliner, the family is plunged into chaos; her father withdraws, her sister falls in love with a spooky character known as the Dredgeman, and her brilliant big brother, Kiwi, defects to a rival park called The World of Darkness. As Ava sets out on a mission through the magical swamps to save them all, we are drawn into a lush and bravely imagined debut that takes us to the shimmering edge of reality." from

Jess: remember when you said, "How 'Geek Love'!" when we were talking about their tribal family? I just scanned the acknowledgements and guess who's mentioned in the last paragraph? Katherine Dunn. You nailed it.

I think I already commented from my phone. The book was interesting, but the family seemed to be living a confused life and fended for themselves in many situations.

This was my 1st book meetup. I think a lot of people felt the family in the story were a little mixed up as I did. So much abandonment and confusion among the characters. I enjoyed the exchange of ideas.

I'm new. This will be my first meet and greet. I look forward to discussing the book and meeting new people.

Read ahead and be ready to discuss. You can either request a copy with your library card at or you can email Lori at [masked] for one of the book club copies. We look forward to seeing you there!

Should I read the book ahead of this event? Or is this like the kickoff for reading the book?
