I apologize. I meant to send that just to her.

See, I flamed myself!

"Keep in mind that so-called legitimate publishing houses also make money on authors"
Yes of course they make money…but by charging the public for works written by authors…not by charging the authors.
That's not a very good comparison…or argument.
What I'd like to know is what "risks" you take since you invest no money but make a profit.
Where exactly are your risks?

Hello Everyone,

I just want to take a moment to respond to Sharon Hubbard's email of January 1, 2014.
The charging of a fee for publishing an author has become a somewhat popular business model since the evolution of indie publishing.
Without such services, most writers can likely never expect to see their work published.  The fact is that so-called traditional publishing houses can neither afford to publish the great quantity of work they receive nor are they really interested in handling more than a limited number of writers.  That in effect significantly reduces one's chances of ever being published.

So yes, in answer to your comment, we do make money helping unpublished authors, the difference is we are generally smaller, can turn around book production quickly, and are willing to take risks traditional publishing houses are unwilling to do. It does not appear that you were at the last meeting, if so, that's really too bad, because I would have appreciated the opportunity to answer this question for you there. I assure you this business model is in your words "legit", and one that is becoming increasingly competitive.

Keep in mind that so-called legitimate publishing houses also make money on authors.  They are not non-profits, as they recoup their production, marketing and distribution costs on the back end, through sales and royalties.  Are some publishers better than others, of course; that is the case in any industry.

I personally only used your e-mail this one time (to write this message to Sharon).  I do not believe anyone including you has been solicited via e-mail or through the AWLI website by me.  A few of individuals having attended the December meeting have indeed reached out to ask questions and/or expressed interest in working with Escribe.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  I am also available to come back to an AWLI meeting to answer any questions anyone might care to ask.

Sincerely,
Diane L. Martin

Hi Steve,
Doesn't she charge a fee for her help?
Doesn't she make money "helping" unpublished authors?
A legit publishing house interested in your book does not charge such fees for these services.
Please do not use my email for this type of thing.
Thanks,
Sharon
