World Series Action 2009

A lot of people have requested a chance to see this years Yanks V Phillies World Series. as the games are broadcast in the middle of the night we're taping tonight's game and any possible next two and meeting up to watch the games on the big screen this Thursday. So try not to check the score!!

The added bonus we can fast forward the games at will; so no commercials. The Southerer may be an odd sounding named pub to watch a two northestern team series but it is actualy refering to New Zealand as it is the London home of Speights brewery; so expect great gold metal and chocolate ales. All are welcome!

As an added bonus the pub is laying on a FREE buffet of hot dogs and onion rings. Who am I to argue?

See you there!

A commentary on last nights game that's only bound to upset Phillies supporters, Yankee's haters, Yankee fans that missed it and most definitely all Red Sox fans! :

"You know how people always tell you that they've been in baseball for 40 years, 50 years, and things happen every game that they never saw?" said Yankees coach Tony Pena, after his Sunday night had turned into Monday morning and he was still trying to digest one of the most astonishing finishes to any game in his 35 seasons in baseball.

"Well, I've never seen that before," said Tony Pena. "I never saw that before in my life."

We've never seen this. In the ninth inning of a World Series game people are going to talk about for the rest of their lives -- We've never seen a World Series turn because a man stole two bases on the same pitch.

But we've never seen anything quite like Johnny Damon, racing the baseball to second base in the ninth inning of a tied World Series game -- and then picking himself up and stampeding all the way to third, as 46,000 occupants of a stunned ballpark turned and asked each other: What just happened?

History
Originally built before the 17th Century with an interior which is thought to include work by the carver Grinling Gibbons. On the other side of the road in 1880's a branch of the Bank of England once stood. It has been frequented in its time by Samuel Pepys, Alfred Tennyson and Charles Dickens.

Tragically, in 1990, a fire broke out and destroyed many of the original ornaments, which have since gone through a restoration to original condition using photographs.

Meet the Dharma Bums TONIGHT
Tibeten and American expat communities come together!

The Dharma Bums came out of the hardcore punk scene in the hearly 80's, but since that time have evolved into a multi styled Blues rock band. Lead singer Phil Void has long been a follower of Tibeten buddism, and spends half his year in India at the Dalai Lama's home.

Phil's proud of his upstate New York roots, calling his band "All the way from Woodstock USA!" and pulls his musical influences from the Kingston Trio (Kingston, NY he'll proudly note) to Television and other classic punk bands

Alongside a Canadian bandmate who lives here in London there will be lots of people from the London Tibeten Community. This is a great chance for two expat communities to come together and listen to some great tunes.

I asked long time American Meetup member Pavel, who produced a documantary film interviewing the Dalai Lama "The Unwinking Gaze" in 2007, who may be on hand to discuss his experiences meeting the Dalai Lama. There will be loads of Tibeten people there tonight who went back to Tibet during the recent uprising there last year.

I might not get down there myself, but Phil Void asked that I post this out. The Cavendish is a very cool pub, there is no cover and will be a fantastic night out!

NFL Wembley Tailgate Party!

NFL International Series 2009 - New England Patriots v Tampa Bay Buccaneers
THIS SUNDAY Wembley Stadium, London!

This is the third annual proper NFL season game to be hosted in the UK at Wembley Stadium and it's all happening this Sunday. Our tailgate party is the perfect place to enjoy a pre game drink!

We meet at the fantastic Volunteer Pub on Baker Street from 1:00 pm on Sunday, which has cozy checker boards and real ale pulled pints and is right next to where we can catch the train to Wembley (trying to catch a civil drink at Wembley itself on game night will be too hectic).

Whether you have tickets or not you are more than welcome. I personally do not have a ticket, but have always, year in year out gotten a ticket right at the stadium for about a £10er just before game time. It will be a great day of camaraderie whether we get in or not. if you have extra tickets this is the perfect place to find a buyer!

The Skinny
This is the NFL's official assesment~ don't shoot the messenger!

The New England Patriots are the strong favorites to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday NFL clash at Wembley Stadium (17:00 GMT). The Patriots are 4-2 so far this season and really returned to form last weekend in the game against Tennessee where Pats Quarterback, Tom Brady, threw six touch down passes for a total of 380 yards. If the three time Super Bowl champion can come anywhere close to repeating those kind of numbers, the Wembley crowd are in for a treat.

In comparison, the Buccaneers are 0-6 for the season and head to London look for a first win of the season. However, the Buccs are getting on the scoreboard, averaging 14 points per game and do have the big play players capable of thrilling the crowds but it is feared that the Patriots may be too strong for the designated home team.

It's anyones game and it's all to play for! See you there!

Meet Special effects Genius Ray Harryhausen! 89!
Meet fellow expat American Londoner in a rare public appearance
http://www.meetup.com/americansabroad/messages/boards/thread/3999994#14131716

Ray Harryhausen is the father of stop-motion animation.

The man who literally, single handedly crated the outstanding special effects for "King Kong" (thats the 1933 King Kong, not the 1977 nor 2007 versions!) and the famous skeleton fight sequence in "Jason and the Argonauts" and "Mighty Joe Young". Harryhausen's last feature film was Clash of the Titans, produced in the early 1981

He is also an American expat, long time resident of London (nearly 40 years!). Come down and meet an all time living legend in the history of world cinema

We'll go to the nearby Samual Smiths pub, The Angel for a bite and some pints after.

Equadistant Totenham Court Road, Holborn, Leicester Square Tube Stations

Further
Hardly retired Mr Harryhausen is involved in producing colorized DVD versions of three of his classic black and white films (20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, and It Came from Beneath the Sea) and a film from the producer of the original King Kong (She). The father of stop-motion animation now lives in London with his wife Diana and takes an avid and enthusiastic interest in The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation and how his extensive collection of models, artwork, stills and miniatures are preserved and exhibited into the future. Because of his wife Diana Harryhausen’s links with the great missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, Ray designed and oversaw the casting in bronze of a one and half times life statue of the great man being attacked by a lion. The statue can be seen in the grounds of The David Livingston Centre in Blantyre, Larnarkshire in Scotland.

Greenwich Picnic Pubcrawl!
We do this every year and it is always a blast!

We'll be meeting in Greenwich Park from midday for a picnic then heading off at 3pm for a pubcrawl around the historic pubs of Greenwich! This is our third annual lazy, late summer pub crawl of Greenwich and it's always a blast!; One local English gentleman member turns up for this event only, every single year! here is a review from last years pub crawl! 100's are turning up and all are welcome.

Look out for my inflatable palm tree (only 3ft high) and a big group of assorted picnikers just inside the gate, to the left. Bring some picnic food and refreshments - sharing with each other is encouraged and a great way to meet new people! Also try to bring a picnic blanket, bottled water and maybe a frisbee or a nerf football. Here is a googlemap showing where we'll be GOOGLEMAP OF GREENWICH PARK

If the weather lets us down then we will instead meet in the The Greenwich Park Bar just outside of the park. Again look for the palm tree!

We will head off on our tour of the local pubs at 3pm. It's an idea to have an umbrella or waterproof jacket to protect you during the short hops from pub to pub.

This will be a joint meetup with a couple of other big Meetup groups so a great way to make new friends in one of the nicest places in London!!

Directions
Take the DLR at Bank or Monument to Cutty Sark DLR Station (Not Greenwich Station). We will be just inside Greenwich Park just left of the main gate, or at the very nearby Greenwich Park Bar just outside the main gate if it rains (Pub crawls on rain or shine!!)

Superbrunch! with American Meetup!

The Breakfast Club in Hoxton is one of the best kept secrets for expats. They not only have fantastically friendly and attentive service but serve up the best properly done, thick pancakes with heaps of real maple syrup. If your longing for a great grand slam breakfast then this is the place!

They also do fantastic egg dishes any style (Florentines, Hollandaise), great sausages smoothies, baked goods and of course a fantastic cup of joe! (not bottomless, unfortunately)

We meet there from 1:00 and will certainly be there until at least 3:30. We may stay later or move on from there to nearby Hoxton Square if the mood suits. Either enjoying the park or one of the local pubs.

The portions are massive, the chairs are comphie, the coffee is flowing and the newspapers and good fellowship make for a relaxing Sunday well spent, so See you there!

La Gondola Cafe has a large outdoor table area is right by an idyllic, tree lined lake which has paddle boats available for rent (no food from outside may be consumed at the tabled areas). Bring the swim suits for the kids; there is a separate wading pool/ sprinklers for all ages (not the lake!), there is also a kids zoo open from 10am-5pm!

2:00 start (Til 10:30PM!), (The park remains specially open just for us!). Please be certain to bring bottled water, as it's going to be a heatwave! Plus the 4th actual falls on a Saturday!

The Pump House Art Gallery, our original venue, backed out on us at the last minute, so unfortunatly we will not be able to bring you a lazer fireworks display as planned, but there will be good fellowship with many expat Americans, and lots of good food and drink to enjoy this special day together! It goes without saying that bringing your own fireworks or BBQ's is strictly prohibited by parks rules, as are glass bottles. Park rangers will be in effect on the day.
