London 4th of July Picnic, BBQ!!
New Venue! THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED!

It's the expat American community's 7th annual 4th of July Picnic, BBQ!

This years annual 4th of July, American Independence Day, is our 7th year running the event so we've upped the ante; This years event includes upscale and affordable BBQ available from La Gondola, which is a parks cafe with a difference.

La Gondola Cafe offers amazing BBQ and fantastic freshmade Italian fare, brick oven pizza, salads and freshmade desserts, watermellon and real gelato! There is a fully stocked bar with mixed drinks as well as beer and wine. Espresso as well as soft drinks, smoothies bottled water and Italian brand soda pop are also available.

This is very much a family as well as adult event and while we will be based at La Gondola Cafe people can feel free to come and go as they please and enjoy some of the parks other facilities, as well as clean toilet facilities at LGC. La Gondola Cafe has a large outdoor table area is right by an idyllic, tree lined lake which has paddle boats available for rent (no food from outside may be consumed at the tabled areas). Bring the swim suits for the kids; there is a separate wading pool/ sprinklers for all ages (not the lake!), there is also a kids zoo open from 10am-5pm!

2:00 start (Til 10:30PM!), (The park remains specially open just for us!). Please be certain to bring bottled water, as it's going to be a heatwave! Plus the 4th actual falls on a Saturday!

The Pump House Art Gallery, our original venue, backed out on us at the last minute, so unfortunatly we will not be able to bring you a lazer fireworks display as planned, but there will be good fellowship with many expat Americans, and lots of good food and drink to enjoy this special day together! It goes without saying that bringing your own fireworks or BBQ's is strictly prohibited by parks rules, as are glass bottles. Park rangers will be in effect on the day. Last years photos

Very disorganised. I was hoping for more kids activities (face painting, games, etc). Also, the music was Latin...not very patriotic for a 4th of July picnic. The food/drink lines were jumbled together, making the wait worse than it needed to be. Worst of all, there were no fireworks. My kids wanted to leave after about a half hour.

A disappointment - no fireworks - not nearly the number of people touted to be here....

We drove down from Newcastle to attend. I was excited to be around other Americans on the 4th for a big celebration. We only stayed a few hours because there was nothing going on.
Red, white and blue banners and balloons would have been nice to see. Maybe hearing Bruce singing Born in the USA (rather than the hispanic music). It was the 4th of July! I didn't even see an American flag. So it was disappointing. I understand the other cafe backed out last minute and I actually liked the new location better. It was a lovely spot on the lake. But....There didn't seem to be much effort put into the spirit of the day. Maybe charge £5.oo a head next year or ask for donations to do a bit more for a red, white and blue theme. Organise softball teams in advance too.

I think the change of venue stopped people from going and having a central place to meet the Gondola is overpriced for what they offer (which is not much). A friend of mine and I went late afternoon (around 5) but never really found a large group of Americans. We ended up going later on to the Chicago Rib Shack to get something American.

I don't think it is the Meetup's fault as they had a grand event planned until the gallery pulled out at the last minute. So, thanks for trying - maybe next year!

Our original venue, The Pump House, got greedy and decided to run their own event (backing out on us two days before the 4th!). Next year I'm getting it all in writing! : )

The chosen meeting point was not ideal. The latin music was too loud. There was no place to interact in a comfortable setting, ie. larger green fields for frisbee. The event should be more clearly marked. Maybe next year?

I think TimeOut said the party was cancelled so this may have been part of the reason the turnout was poor. The move to the new venue seemed to come with little 4th of July spirit...shame.

I got there at about 5pm and it seemed that everyone knew each other already. As I am here alone I had come to the BBQ alone and found that people pretty much stuck with the people they came with. So I didn't stay long because I didn't know anyone and felt lonely. But it was probably because I came so late. I'll definitely be on time for the next event.

Showed up in the evening only to see a sign posted that there were no events and no one was around. :(

I am so disappointed in the BBQ on sat. There was nothing there that was advertised. Is thids typical for your events?

great time. Food was good but could have been a touch cheaper. The location was perfect. The fireworks were missed during the time it took me to use the mens room. I dont think the advert should have mentioned fireworks... it was kind of misleading. But for free - simply great. Well done everyone.

Honestly, I thought it was more of a show up rather than a meet up. It would have been nice to have something a little more structured. I would be happy to volunteer next year if I am still here.

First time attending the BBQ. We love Battersea Park and were excited this was the venue. Nice to have BBQ served from the cafe and felt they did well with the number of people they were trying to serve. A bit disappointed that fireworks had been cancelled as this is quinticential ingredient to an Independence Day celebration. Met some nice fellow Americans as this was the first time we had attended anything through this meet up.

The person in charge of this group just lost a lot of people. If I were him, I wouldn't bother trying to arrange another 4th of July event. He could of at least let people know by e-mail that it was off instead of having people go all the way there witout checking that the event was allowed.

This was our first time try to meet the London Expat American Meetup Group. Since we did not know anyone it was hard to find a welcome sign or an American Flag or a 4th of July mark. But we successfully found the grill bar with lots of people we had just no idea who came to celebrate and who did not. We had seen a sign that public liability insurance, risk assessment and some other papers were not provided therefore the event had been cancelled. We ate BBQ (it was a nice grill but it would been a little better with a BBQ sauce) and we had a wonderful time. We still celebrated and enjoyed the beautiful park and the nice music at La Gondola Cafe.
The location was a great choice.

What happened? First it's on, then it's not, then there's a sign posted outside Battersea saying NO 4th of July events in this park. No semblance of anything American barring a few Uncle Sam hats. What a fiasco.

My family (my wife is American) and I turned up to the new venue in Battersea Park only to find the people at the Gondola Cafe said it was indeed cancelled after reading confusing messages on this website and Time Out's. The local Council apparently took fright apparently expecting to overwhelmed by over 500 Yanks and withdrew their permission on grounds of Health and Safety (Typically English). Admittedly, we did get there a bit early, I reckon I spotted about half a dozen bored Americans eating at the restaurant. We decided to sample the BBQ meal on offer which was really good and then left to discover Battersea Park with our kids which was great fun. As we walked out of the park at around 5.00 to catch the bus into central London, we saw two 2 Americans with very small flags heading towards the venue. Never mind ! We had a fun day out and what do I care, I'm English ! Better luck next time Wilber.

This was my first meetup event that I have attended, I don't normally go to the events because I have a young family and there are very few events for families. I must say I was slightly disappointed, I didn't find any place where people were meeting up for this event. It would have been nice if there were events or something organized so you could actually meet and interact with people from "meetup". Myself and family had a nice time at the park but it would've been nice to meet some fellow americans.

It was a fantastic event & great meeting people & socialising. There was such a good vibe & I really enjoyed myself. We left the park at 11pm!

Well as a first timer to one of these events it wasn't really clear where the "main" location was. Also there wasn't fireworks which is the reason why I didn't go to another even in the first place. There wasn't an announcement or anything. I was really dissapointed, since 4th of July is all about fireworks. It would have been a lot better if there were organized events. But you can only do so much when you don't have budget or getting paid.

Would have been nice to have been informed that promised activities weren't happening (bouncy castles for kids, wading pool - hasn't been one in Battersea Park for 20 years according to staff!). VERY disorganized. Found several people wandering around after having seen the "No 4 July activities scheduled in this park" signs. Many didn't make to La Gondola at all.

It was a disaster. The fact that the organiser didn't even turn up to apologise for sudden cancellation is really awful and disrepectful to the people who were there. The lady at the Gallery said the organiser never bothered to do the paper work to book the venue. I suggest someone else should take over this meet up.

I showed up fashionably late, and everyone was fashionably gone. I was there around 7, and did not stay for long. On the way out I spoke to a few people that said a large group was there earlier, but then they all went somewhere else. I was expecting something in line with the description on the website and emails, but when I showed up it was nothing like that. No worries though. I will look for more events and hope that things will work out better next time. Craig

It's hard not to have a nice day at the park, but it seems as though the event was 'sort of' cancelled. I'll try again another time.

We got to the venue only to notice saying that there weren't any 4th of July events happening. We heard a lot of people who were at La Gondola wondering what happened. As it was great weather my partner & I enjoyed the food and atmosphere but were expecting something more "American" to the evening. As a new member to this group I hope future events have a better outcome.

We really never found out where all the Americans were! We first camped out near the Cafe and then noticed people walking further down. So we picked up our stuff and walked down to the Pump House.
There was not the same 'lets get to meet other americans' feeling as last year.

Although we were told about the change of venue to another place within Battersea Park, it was confusing that there was a sign on the gate of the park saying that no 4th July events were taking place. Luckily I was with other people so we just had our own picnic and did our own thing but it would have been tough for people by themselves to know what was going on, we saw one guy walk around for ages looking for the event.

So...how many people are going to go and picnic? I wanted to play frisbee and chill out and picnic with people... Is anyone still up for that?

    July 3, 2009

Sorry~ The event is a victim of it's own success! So numbers must be limited; Next year I'm getting it all in writing! : )

    July 3, 2009

To clear the confusion: Pretty much everything is still on except for the fireworks and large public congregation outside of the cafe area. This event is limited to La Gondola Cafe and only for those that have already RSVP'd. Individuals can bring their own picnic foods and enjoy them separate to this event in accordance with parks rules, as on any day of the week, but not at La Gondola.

I'm confused about the change too -- I guess we'll still be picnic-ing in the park on Saturday regardless, if anyone else is going to be there too. (Not sure about the 'heat-wave' though).

I'm confused by this change. Does that mean that it's no longer a picnicing type event with games? Did everything except for the food get cancelled?
