Christmas DAY Meetup - American "Pot Luck" Xmas
ALTERNATE XMAS IDEA: To heck with the transport; Feel free to use the "Talk About This Meetup" section to plan to meet. You can pick a street corner; walk around for a pub that might be open, do some caroling, heck, at least the walk takes you out of the house for a few hours! Takes only one brave soul to suggests a definite place and time!
Christmas DAY Meetup For most of us expat's, Christmas Day means chaos on the roads and at the airports, with flights at extortionate rates. If your holiday plans do not involve going home to loved ones why not get together with American Meetup and share the eggnog? Since (AS some of you newbies may not know) ALL transportation shuts in the UK From Christmas Eve till into mid Boxing Day, so Xmas tends to be sitting around the house in your jammies Morcambe and Wise reruns on BBC1, and lots of internet facetime

(Mini cabs in London typically charge upwards of £110 each way on Xmas Day~

Lots of people have RSVP'd for the Christmas Day Get together; many of them with cars. If you folks with transport would be so good as to offer a ride to other expats in your area it would help get the party started!

It would be the most sensible way to beat the insane £200 round trip fare in a mini cab on Christmas (ALL transport shuts down Xmas eve until Boxing Day Saturday) and also a great way to get to know people.

Drivers can expect a chip in for gas or at least a free festive beverage for their troubles from fellow Holiday carpoolers!

Got a Car?: Can you offer transport to people in your area?
If you do not have a car, and are not in walking distance please post what area you are! http://www.meetup.com/americansabroad/messages/boards/thread/8273040

At the end today it seems that is not as supportive as it should be. The fact that there are no public transport during all the day just make people feel more lonely than ever. I been expending Christmas in diferent countries and never have such a bad experince...More poor is the country more generous and warm. We are losing the important values...

Hey- really hope you guys can both make it! We've got about 10 right now. Parking on the road shouldn't be a problem. Some of us are parked on the road outside.

Hi Yui, what time is the champion open until?

      December 25, 2013

  • Marsha

Hey guys Merry Christmas. I was browsing the internet looking for something to get myself out of the house, and stumbled across this. Do you have to be American to join??? I would love to join any meetups happening in Southwest or West London. Unfortunately my chauffeur, (Transport for London) is having a day off, so if anyone is going to an event past Fulham and would not mind sharing a taxi, car or walk to the event, that would be amazing..

Everyone in the extended Westbourne Park / Notting Hill / Kensington / Bayswater area--

I asked around and the Champion seems like the best place for drinks and/or lunch.

    http://www.thechampionpub.co.uk/

I'll be there at noon to save a table. (bookings only for full Christmas meals, but sizable non-reserved seating) Comment or like if you might come (even if not definite)!

    See you there!

If you like to cycle and can easily cycle to the center, join a cycling event, which rides around London from east to west (and ends with dinner) -
    http://lcc.org.uk/events/mithrasmas-mass-2013-a-christmas-day-cycle-ride-in-london-see-more-at-http-slash-slash-sedgemore-dot-com-slash-2013-slash-12-slash-mithrasmas-mass-2013-a-christmas-day-cycle-ride-in-london-slash-number-sthash-dot-8mzn5rcd-dot-dpuf

It's a lot of fun - I did it a couple of years ago and recommend it , although not sure if I can this year. It's virtually car free, so it's also a good time to try cycling (hire a boris bike).

They meet in Greenwich at 10 am and might be able to pick up riders along the way (contact the organizer - info on the website).

If anyone lives or is going to be in/near Covent Garden on Christmas day, I propose meeting for coffee in the morning at Pret at 78 St. Martin's Lane at 10:00 a.m. (yes, they will be open).

    Hi Wilber

I'm sorry to say but your organisation skills regarding this Christmas event is sorely lacking. I can't figure out if there is a place to go for people like me who are unfortunately on our own this Christmas. Initially, I thought you were planning a meet-up around the Hoxton area, then Tristan kindly invited us to his home, but now when people ask you where and when this is happening you tell people to do your own thing and invite people to their home?? WTF, the expression someone who could not even organise a piss up in a brewery comes to mind...

Apologies, I just needed to vent this as I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way!! Ok, I live in the city/Hoxton area if people want to meet up for drinks or I can organise some food at my home or is Tristan's invite still on- should we all meet there?

Wilber or Tristan a response would be nice.

    Cheers
