AMERICANS UNITED for Separation of Church & State GA Chapter Message Board › Dr. Ed Buckner will address our meet up this Saturday Nov 19 read below
Theocracy is in the air (what else is new?) After Dr. Ed Buckner (Bio below) speaks with us we will hold a strategy session inorder to discuss how we can gain more positive visability in Georgia. During last years graduation debakle AU was accussed of not being a local organization and that outsiders were butting into Georgia business. During TV interviews the attempt was made to set the record straight that we, the citizens of Georgia, stand up to theocratic intrusions and that national AU supports our efforts but does not start them. Let's get our group creative thinking caps on, enjoy some good food and friends and come up with ideas to promote our much needed organization. Also WELCOME to our new members. See all of you on the 19th at Manuels Tavern.
As always in Peace,
Dr. Ed Buckner's Bio:
DR. ED BUCKNER is a board member and former president of American Atheists. Since 1963, the organization has worked for the civil liberties of atheists and the total, absolute separation of government and religion. The organization was born out of a court case begun by the family of Madalyn Murray O'Hair, who succeeded in court filings against mandatory public school prayer and Bible recitation.
Dr. Buckner, the son of a low-church Episcopal clergyman, has been married to his wife Diane since 1968, and the couple has one son, Michael. Dr. Buckner earned his B.A. at Rice University in 1967 and a Ph.D. in 1983 at Georgia State University.
In his professional career, Dr. Buckner has served as a professor, technical school administrator, and Executive Director of the Council for Secular Humanism. He has several published works two of which are Quotations that Support the Separation of State and Church (co-edited with his son), and "Secular Schooling" co-authored in Parenting Beyond Belief (2007).
Dr. Buckner has debated and spoken across the United States and in Great Britain (often about the Treaty of Tripoli, a document from 1797 containing a clause about religion in America, and on "This Is a Free Country, Not a Christian Nation.") His "No More Lies!" talk was featured at the Godless Americans March on Washington D.C. in 2002. He serves on several national advisory boards and committees.
Ed Buckner and Michael Buckner are the authors of a forthcoming book--working title: In Freedom We Trust; working subtitle: The U.S.is a Free Country, not a Christian Nation. Prometheus Books will issue the book, probably in Fall 2012.
