Anyone feel like a Saturday afternoon out in nature, speaking lots of Japanese, and enjoying a bento picnic lunch in the grass??
We'll meet on the platform of the northbound MTA train at Bronxville station. It is about a 30 min train ride from Grand Central. Take the Harlem-Hudson line bound for North White Plains. There are two trains an hour so I am coordinating our meeting time with a train arrival. We will coordinate the end of the outing with a train departure too for everyone's convenience. (Of course, you are welcome to come early or stay late and wander around the cute, little village on your own.) See, http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/planning/schedules/ for train schedules and information. If anyone wishes to drive, there is a metered lot right by the station.
Our first stop will be Japan Inn, a Zagat rated restaurant, to pick up bento box lunches for our picnic! They have a set bento lunch that includes chicken teriyaki, sushi, and several other side dishes for $9.95. I have eaten at Japan Inn and have found their food pretty good, although it seemed a little geared toward American tastes. I haven't tried their bento take out lunches. Maybe oishii... Please bring along whatever you would like to drink too. Water is always good for hiking. You can also bring along your own bento, if you prefer. You may wish to bring sun block and bug spray too.
After picking up the lunches, we'll set out on the Bronx River Pathway. This is a really pretty, flat path mostly along the river, lined with trees, geese, ducks, and more. I even saw a large turtle here once! Let's walk up river for about an hour, find a nice spot to have lunch, then come back. The whole thing should take 2-3 hours. Please wear comfortable shoes for walking. See this link for more on Bronx River Pathway: http://www.traillink.com/trail/bronx-river-pathway.aspx.
Needless to say, the afternoon will follow Louis' terrific rule of JAPANESE ONLY. If you need to say something in English, you can write it down and someone will try to help you say it in Nihongo.
I'll send out more details and my phone number to participants a few days before the event. In the event of rain, I will postpone. Hope lots of you can get out for an afternoon in nature while it is still warm enough!
