Meetup Description: Local Amnesty International will be hosting a panel discussion on the topic of Human Rights in China at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta Wednesday August 6th at 7 p.m. This event is titled Human Rights in China : Legacy of the Beijing Olympics. When China made its bid for the 2008 Olympics, authorities promised improvements in human rights. The countdown to the Beijing Olympics has begun, and the Chinese authorities must make good on their promises and uphold the legacy of the Games.
The panel will include:
Dr. Susan Wright, a China country specialist with Amnesty International USA ? Dr. Wright will introduce Amnesty International?s Beijing Olympics campaign and discuss recent human rights developments related to the Summer Olympics. She will present several featured human rights defenders for whom letter-writing or other actions will be available.
Dr. Dabney Evans of the Institute of Human Rights at Emory University ? Dr. Evans has recently published an article in the Journal of Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology on the mental health consequences of Tibetans who have sought refuge in India and Nepal to escape the People?s Republic of China. Dr. Evans will be discussing the nexus of human rights and China and mental health.
