Scala Academy III

Hey you all!

It's time for the next meetup. This will again be a meetup about learning and teaching anything Scala.

The last academy was a great success and we like to do a repeat. Feel free to suggest topics in the comments!

Plan

• 18:30 Good Thai Food + Intro

We start with the same Thai food as last time. It seemed to be a success ;) After this Joost will introduce the meeting and we can split up in groups.

• 19:00 Start teaching

There will be different topics/levels people can choose from. You should choose the groups fits you best and learn!

• 21:30 Wrap-up + chats

This is where the main meetup is ended, to allow for people to go home on time. But you are of course welcome to stay a bit longer for a chat and to complete some stuff that needs completing ;)

Topics

• Basic Scala

• Akka

• ...?

By the way, here is a short blog post about Scalaz actors (I remember a question about them): http://zvozin.github.io/blog/2013/05/12/non-blocking-pipelines-with-scalaz-actors/

Seems that they have typed actors already :)

    Hey!

    I again enjoyed meeting up.

Thank you Cupenya for your generosity, thank you Dmitry for teaching us some Akka and thank all that attended. You all make these events possible!

    Cheers,

    Joost

Thanks to the organizers, I enjoyed it. :) Despite that we ran out of time at the end. :) But it's hard to fully implement something in a such a short time generally.... Already thinking about more advanced and particular topics to cover in future, e.g. Akka testing, dealing with Akka IO...

On my way. See y'all in a bit!

Hi all, I wish I could attend! Enjoy tonight and 'fijne kerstdagen' to you all from Rome! :)

Unfortunately something else came up at the last minute :-( I hope to make it next time

I would have loved to be there and I could have talked about Unfiltered, Dispatch, Casbah, and a bunch of other things, if I wouldn't have had a calendar conflict with the rest of my family. Happy to do that some other time though. (We're using Akka as well, but I can't say I'm a huge fan.)

      Maybe next time? ;)

We need people to talk, who has another topic than Basic Scala they are willing to inform us with?

Can someone do something about Akka? It seems to be in demand.

Other topics I think that can be interesting:
    - Futures/Observers (from the Coursera course)
    - Introduction to one of the (web-) framework
    - more advanced Scala
    - Migrating from for example Java to Scala

    Anyone?

    December 12, 2013

    • Elmar W.

I haven't anything prepared, but I can also do something about testing, or combine testing with Akka. Or with regard to advanced Scala: I can give an introduction to parser / combinators which allow you to write your own parsers within minutes in Scala.

    • Joost H.

Ha!, I haven't either. I seem to be finishing them 1 day before the deadline now ;)

Forgot that I have a dentist appointment tomorrow. You guys have fun!

Just an FYI in case anyone just read Rockstart Accelerator as Location without the actual address: Cupenya and Rockstart moved, we are now located at Herengracht 182 in Amsterdam, NOT at the old location at Vijzelstraat.

I can not make it tomorrow. Have fun!

We have no food sponsor this time.
So any donations during the event are much appreciated ;)

I can probably provide the location if needed (Rotterdam - Lunatech). Let me know if that is of any interests.

Sorry cannot make it Thursday. Something came up.

      See you next time

I need some help with Play and (the new) JSON validation. I could also teach basic Scala and Play! if needed

Wouldn't it be nice to convert the www.scala-tour.com content and to run it on a local Scala Academy server?

      December 9, 2013

    • Joost H.

I think it is a bit much to convert the whole site, but it has some nice samples we can discuss

      December 13, 2013

  • Dmitry I.

I also can do Akka or Akka IO.
Or maybe Lift web framework intro if there are someone still interested in it. :)

    December 12, 2013

    • Joost H.

Cool! Please do! I think everyone will appreciate if you explain some Akka ;)

      December 13, 2013

  • Joost H.

We have a nice venue. We will be welcome at the new location of Rockstart, hosted by Cupenya.

An introduction to Akka would be great...

    December 9, 2013

  • Elmar W.

Another thing: I'm currently trying out different things how to manage dependencies (database connections, actor refs, etc) for larger Akka applications for testing and deployment. If there are some more who use Akka in production might be a way to compare notes on this topic.

    December 8, 2013

  • Elmar W.

I can give an intro to Akka, some people asked for that in the past.

    December 8, 2013

  • Fabio T.

oh nooo I'll be already in Italy then :( you guys have fun!

    December 2, 2013

  • Massimo

I'm in Italy as well ..see you next time
