Scala Academy

Hey you all!

This is a meetup about learning and teaching anything Scala. Please suggest topics in the comments and the answers when signing up! Anyone willing to teach a topic please speak up!

Plan

• 18:30 Food + Intro

Introduce the meeting and we can split up in groups.

• 19:00 Start teaching

There will be different topics/levels people can choose from. You should choose the groups fits you best and learn!

• 21:30 Wrap-up + chats

This is where the main meetup is ended, to allow for people to go home on time. But you are of course welcome to stay a bit longer for a chat and to complete some stuff that needs completing ;)

Topics

• Monad transformers (Erik)

• Android development with Scala (Kepa)

• Spray/Akka in 1 hour (Dmitry) inspired by https://github.com/ajantis/simple-sample-service/)

Many thanks to Erik for a great intro into functional error handling - it's exactly the problem we deal with every day. Also thanks for organisers for yet another great meet-up.

Certainly a nice practical explanation about monad transformers applied to a Play! app, given by Erik. I didn't understand all of it after a long workday, but someday I will getting the hang of it. At least Erik has me motivated to learn more about it.
    Thanks

Off topic; for those of you who are going to Scala Days:

Already in January I had booked a friend’s apartment in Berlin for the week of 15 to 22 June.
The plan was that my GSoC student from Odessa would stay there as well, but it seems he will not get a passport in time.
So I am looking for one or two persons to share the apartment and the rent cost.

The apartment is nice. There are two sleeping rooms (one with a double bed, one with 2 beds), and there is also space for sleeping in the living room. The location is conveniently close to Ostbahnhof, and around 20 minutes walking from the conference venue and also from Alexanderplatz. There are 3 bicycles for the tenants. The daily apartment price is 50 Euro plus 5 Euro per extra person.

Please contact me if you are interested.

I'll do a session on how to get rid of the deep nesting you typically end up with if you use things like Future[Option[A]].

So, super useful I would say.

The 29th is a public holiday! I'm not sure if I'll be around or have time in the evening. Too bad :(

I do have an interactive talk & exercises ready about flattening code with monad transformers, so if anybody is interested, then maybe next time?
