ACTION ALERT: Wild Horse Protest Vigil & Rally Phx March 10th-11th, 2011

WHAT: Wild Horse Protest Rally
Candlelight Vigil

WHERE: in front of Downtown Phoenix Sheraton Hotel, 3rd St & Van Buren

WHEN:
VIGIL - Thurs March 10, 2011 7pm
PROTEST - Fri March 11, 2011 10 am-2pm

WHY:

America's federally protected Wild Horses & Burros are being systematically rounded up and removed permanently from our public wild lands using brutal, inhumane methods by the federal agency charged with "protecting" them, the Bureau of Land Management" (BLM) which is holding an Advisory Board meeting during these 2 days in Phoenix. Experts using BLM's own planning documents believe America's Wild Horses & Burros are already genetically compromised as a result and will be extinct in the wild within 3-5 years. Meanwhile taxpayers foot the multimillion dollar bill for all: the cruelty while BLM captures & pens the horses in squalid conditions with next to no care as deaths, casualties and spontaneous abortions mount from the horrific stampedes and then set in from the overcrowded dirty facilities and some victims are not even counted -- as for foals who are "too young" to be counted according to the BLM. Set this against a backdrop of welfare ranching where Americans subsidize corporate ranchers profits and cattle outnumber wild horses up to 100 to 1 while BLM's "science" is skewed to leave the horses last on the list or off the list in favor of every other possible use of our public lands. Top this with the fact that the BLM rebuffs and frustrates all attempts by observers to chronicle these travesties, even trampling 1st Amendment rights (currently in litigation). Horses are castrated with no anesthesia or pain medication and then go into "long term holding" never to be seen again, never accounted for in any way .... and we subsidize all of it and get no voice, no recognition of our voice. Time for all of it to end and time for BLM to hear us loud and clearly.

Hi,

I'm writing to let you know about an upcoming wild horse protest rally in Phoenix. There will be a meeting in Phoenix of the BLM's National Wild Horse & Burro Advisory Board on March 10 and 11, 2011. The wild ones need you - please plan to attend:

http://rtfitch.wordpress.com/2011/02/18/action-alert-wild-horse-advocates-to-rally-at-blm-meeting/

Please come. Please spread the word to your members and other groups and help us show the BLM we are not OK with the horrific treatment, the planned extermination of America's Wild West Icon of freedom, strength, grace and beauty. This is the last living remnant of our historic culture they have in the cross-hairs and one which is federally protected by the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse & Burro Act, the ONLY piece of legislation every passed by our Congress at that point which pass UNANIMOUSLY. Not even the votes for approval to enter WWII were unanimous....

Please help us show the BLM that all Americans value our wild horses & burros, all ages, and from all walks of life. It would be great if you can bring a few duplicate signs or a banner to proclaim who you are like "Students against BLM MISmanagement", "Scouts against BLM Roundups!" or "Vets fought for Freedom, for Wild Horses too!".

This effort to get folks to attend is very grassroots and I'd appreciate hearing from you with your plans to attend. Please join us all as we speak for these voiceless animals, both in the sham meeting and on the street where we will memorialize the dead and the tens of thousands of captive and now hidden horses and demand real change from our government.

Best,
Kathleen

MORE INFORMATION

About Me:
I'm not formally affiliated with any one group but am working with all the "big name" wild horse advocacy organizations who will be represented. You may already know about some of the more well known advocates like Ginger Kathrens, Emmy award winning filmmaker of the Cloud, the Wild Stallion PBS series who will be part of our press conference on the 10th.
I'm just a local grassroots organizer who's been following this issue for over 2 years closely and my background includes managing an Oct 2010 protest rally for wild horses in front of John McCain's office in Phoenix. Here is a link to a report from the day... http://tuesdayshorse.wordpress.com/2010/10/25/phoenix-wild-horse-and-anti-slaughter-rally-in-pictures/

Who is the Advisory Board:
The BLM Advisory Board meets once or twice annually and is mainly composed of anti-wild horse people who do not advocate or bring any value to the management of the horses - big game hunters, cattlemen, ranchers and their buddies such as vets and so on, nearly all of whom never saw a wild horse or burro they liked - yet they "advise" BLM how they should "manage" wild horses. Disgusting, as this board is essentially a stacked deck against wild horses.

THE SCHEDULED EVENTS
On Thurs, the 10th, the board will only meet for 4 hours in the afternoon and it is closed to public comment. Advocates will have a candlelight vigil that evening for the hundreds of wild ones they have killed in their mad rush to round them all up and for the 14,000+ they have rounded up, destroying wild families and making the horses prisoners for life or worse - many wild horses go to slaughter although the BLM continues to claim they don't allow this. Sources at Canadian abattoirs state thousands of mustangs per year are killed there.

On Fri the 11th, the Board will take public comments in the meeting during the morning session 9 am-noon and advocates will be holding a protest rally from 10am-2pm. We expect the protest to be well attended but more is better as the situation is truly untenable.

MORE INFORMATION, just so you can easily view photos of cruelty and abuse, reports from observers, videos, etc. :

on a "typical roundup" - http://rtfitch.wordpress.com/2011/02/23/obamas-bl-wild-horse-harvesting-machine-continues-at-full-throttle-in-nevada/ ;

Note: these are just the most recent references fyi -- there are hundreds, thousands more photos, videos and articles online that chronicle what advocates HAVE been able to see, these are the "tip of the iceberg" given that advocates are thwarted 9 times out of 10 in attempts to witness and report the cruelty. I chose not to reference the ones where horses are killed by callous dereliction of responsibility but there are many reports and videos out there. It's truly heartbreaking. If you read more on the topic at RT Fitch's blog, Horseback Magazine or Tuesday's Horse blog, you will see them.
