RIP dear Ned the elephant

Ned the elephant was confiscated from circus "trainer" Lance Ramos on November 8, 2008 for repeated failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Ned arrived the next day for temporary rehabilitation at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee more than 1,000 lbs. underweight.

Ned has now passed away. Long-term stress is believed to be a factor of his diseased, ulcerated belly & he'd had long time untreated pancreatic disease while made to "perform" in the circus. He never made it to permanent sanctuary. RIP dear boy.

Hi Veronica:

Thanks so very much for posting this. I watched the video of Ned's arrival and also went to The Elephant Sanctuary's website to see what they do and how they run their wonderful organization ... they are amazing people, and it's obvious that they care very much about the elephants. In the video of Ned's arrival at TES, I was SO struck by the patient and thoughtful way in which the TES caretakers allowed Ned to come off the trailer -- totally in his own time and at his own pace. You could see Ned carefully considering whether or not he wanted to step down from the transport trailer. Several times he put a foot out, only to bring it back, and the entire time a TES caretaker was standing -- very patiently -- off to one side, simply waiting for Ned to decide when and where he would put his feet down onto solid ground and start his new life, and encouraging him by dropping treats onto the ground. I felt that they treated him with the utmost dignity and respect by allowing him time to make this very important step. This sanctuary truly has the interests of the elephants at heart ... they don't allow the public in to disrupt the elephants' usual schedule, and the girls (only female elephants are in this herd) are never asked to do anything they don't want to do -- the barns are cleaned once they have left the immediate area and have decided to explore another part of the property, they are not herded or imposed upon to do anything but what they want to do, throughout the course of the day. The video of Ned walking the grounds is amazing, and the part where he backs himself up to a tree to scratch his backside is priceless - just sweet Ned enjoying his freedom. What a simple -- yet powerful -- image! The Elephant Sanctuary is doing great work to educate people that circuses (and zoos for that matter) can't give elephants what they ultimately deserve - simply the freedom and dignity to just BE ......... RIP dear Ned, you were a sweet, gentle soul.

Hi Kim,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about Ned, about his arrival at the sanctuary and what you saw in his videos. There were so many people rooting for this boy and at first it seemed as if he was getting healthier and beginning to gain weight from the correct diet and loving care he was now receiving at his temporary sanctuary. But it was not to be.

Sweet Ned is a strong reminder of why there is a need to advocate for these majestic beings that deserve to be allowed to live the natural life that is meant for them. Thanks again Kim.
