Rescued American Eskimo dog gets new family
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

KENNEWICK -- It didn't take long for Gertie's story to have a happy ending.

The 10-year-old American Eskimo dog rescued in late May from an east Kennewick puppy mill spent her first night Wednesday in a potential new home.

Gertie had been at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society waiting for a family to adopt her.

The Herald ran a story Wednesday about how Gertie needed surgery to remove suspected cancerous tumors from her torso and a loving home that could tend to her special needs.

Wednesday morning, a couple went to the Kennewick shelter and were approved for Gertie's adoption, said Ed Dawson, Humane Society operations manager.

Gertie will get to stay with the couple for a 10-day trial period to make sure the match is good, but Dawson said he's pretty certain he won't see Gertie back at the shelter.

Other potential adopters also were at the shelter Wednesday looking at the remaining six American Eskimos in need of new homes.

Gertie is expected to have surgery Friday to remove the tumors at Coleman Veterinary Clinic in Pasco, Dawson said.

A fund was being set up at the shelter to cover the estimated $2,000 for the surgery, but Dawson said Benton County Sheriff Larry Taylor said the sheriff's office would cover the bill.

After the 371 dogs were seized, the sheriff's office accepted donations to cover the health, welfare and medical care of the animals, said Lt. Joe Lusignan.

About $12,000 came in from people in the Tri-Cities and Washington, along with donors from Florida, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Alaska and Hawaii, he said.

Dawson said Taylor saw the news reports about Gertie's need for surgery and contacted him Wednesday morning after getting approval to use some of the donated money to cover the veterinary tab.

The remainder of the donations will go to The Humane Society of the United States, which mobilized animal volunteers from around the country to help rescue the dogs.

It cost more than $330,000 for the rescue operation, which included direct costs of the value of services from local veterinarians and clinics for the first 30 days, Lusignan said.

The services, however, were provided to the county at no cost by The Humane Society of the United States.
