UAALA:

Below is a forward from Judie Mancuso regarding proposed budget cuts that would affect Los Angeles Animal Services (the shelters), thus resulting in an even worse picture for animals in the shelters.  Coucilmembers have already responded to calls made by concerned Angelenos, so there is hope that these harmful budget cuts will be curtailed. Thanks for helping these animals!

All:

I heard that there were two motions made today:  1) Councilmember Alarcon proposed using a fee from recycling bins to pay for animal services and other departments budget cuts.  And 2)  Councilmember Cardenas proposing to give LAAS $500K to keep the shelters hours the same for 3 more months in order to alert the community of the decrease in hours.

This is all still going through the budget process.  I was told the fact that phone calls were made to the City Council and folks showing up and speaking today put this on the table for these negotiations.  Thanks to everyone that showed up and called, you made the difference.  We won't know the end results for a couple of weeks, I will keep you posted if further community action is needed.

Thank you so much again for showing up to protect the animals.

Dear LA Friends:

L.A. has a budget crunch and the animals will be the ones to feel it the most.  Animals Services is getting cut 12% while other departments are getting a

3 - 7.9% increase.  Please help to prevent this by calling the LA City Councilmembers tomorrow and ask that they please reconsider the drastic LAAS services cuts.

L.A. has been leading the way with new and greatly improved shelters, the new spay and neuter ordinance, etc.  However, these cuts will take them backwards.  Cutting 50 employees and decreasing hours will only hurt the animals chances of having the best care and decrease their chance of getting out of the shelter alive.  For your reference, here is a link to a letter urging the cuts not be made:

If you would like to help LAAS keep their shelters budgets from drastically decreasing, please:

1) Call every Councilmember, commend them on their steps forward for animal welfare, but ask that they do not make these drastic cuts to LAAS. Please ask them to restore funding to the LAAS budget.

2) Please show-up Monday at LA City Hall at 10 a.m. and speak out against the budget cuts, fill out a speaker card when you get there.  They will be taking public comment on the issue. Sorry that we did not get notice sooner, I just found out about this situation today.
