We sent this letter directly to PETA:
I told you both I had such a great time helping out at the
Green Festival. I believed the shower stint held a lot of educational value while being funny and eye catching.
I was just perusing the net for articles or videos with regards to the pain butterflies experience when being pinned. A man I work with had recently said that he was trying to "pin me down like a butterfly," but I flew away. I told him this was a cruel statement. He actually became got angry and stopped speaking to me. The only reason I can think of for him giving me the cold shoulder is perhaps he realized it was some sort of inappropriate sexual comment on his part, which he didn't want to own up to...which brings me to why I am emailing you both, whom I respect so much. Upon my searching, I found an article, which lead me to this:
http://peta.xxx
I have experienced sexual harassment of several sorts in various job positions I have held. When I see a site such as yours equating helping animals with "happy endings," I really feel PETA has lost the connection to what their main purpose is helping animals AND people. The effects of Porn and those in it are like people being "pinned." I can tell you, I will never partake in another PETA event if this site encourages a porn-like platform just to arouse people to go to their website. I totally get eye catching stunts like the shower and the meat packing as they have theatrical qualities and provide information on a deeper level, but porn just hurts people, just as the man I work with hurt me by giving me the cold shoulder when I confronted him on his statement. I'm sorry PETA doesn't seem to realize sexual exploitation hurts, but it really does, and it has long lasting effects.
That's all I wanted to say. My fiance agrees, and we are writing this letter together.
Thanks for your attention, and we hope you will forward this along to your supervisors.
Peace,
Monique Lukens
