Action Alert:
California Residents: 3 Animal Bills Need Urgent Action

Published 05/23/07

Currently being considered in the California legislature are 3 bills that need your urgent action:

* AB 1634, The California Healthy Pets Act ? the spaying and neutering of companion animals
* AB 1614 ? veterinary care standards at rodeos
* SB 880 ? the sale of Kangaroo skins in California

These bills will be voted on at any moment, so it is critical that you take a few moments and contact your legislators today. Many animals need your voice!
How You Can Help

1. Please call, email, or fax your state Assemblymember today and urge him/her to support AB 1634 when it comes to the floor for a vote. You will find information on how to contact your legislator at the end of this alert.

* California Healthy Pets Act (AB 1634) ? SUPPORT. This bill requires the spaying and neutering of most cats and dogs by the time the animal is four months old. Those who have not spayed or neutered their cat/dog would be given time to spay or neuter before a fine would be assessed. A portion of the fines would fund free or low-cost spay or neuter programs.

2. Please call, email, or fax your state Assemblymember today and urge him/her to support AB 1614 when it comes to the floor for a vote. You will find information on how to contact your legislator at the end of this alert.

* Rodeo Standards (AB 1614) ? SUPPORT. Existing California law requires a veterinarian to be present at or on call during the performance of rodeos that have four or more animal events. The role of the vet at a rodeo is to treat and to report on injured animals during these events. If passed into law, AB 1614 would reduce the number of animal events required for a vet to be present from four down to just three. As a result, this legislation would apply to more rodeos and it would help a greater number of the animals who are injured each year during rodeos.

3. Please call, email, or fax your state Senator today and ask that he or she vote NO on SB 880 when it comes to the floor for a vote this Thursday. You will find information on how to contact your legislator at the end of this alert.

* Kangaroo Bill (SB 880) ? OPPOSE. This bill would allow the sale of kangaroo skins and body parts in the state of California. If this bill passes it would erase a law that was implemented in 1970 to protect kangaroos by prohibiting the sale of their skins. Last session, a similar bill passed the legislature that reversed this protection for alligators, allowing their skins to be sold in California. It is important that the same fate does not befall the kangaroos!
