London protests against the Grand National – 1st Demo

This William Hill, on Upper Tachbrook Street between Warrwick Way and Longmoore Street. Nearest tube Victoria.

This demo is to ask people to not bet on the Grand National. If there are enough protestors some of us can move off to additional betting shops in the area. At one point during the demo we have a memorial/funeral part where we will be reading out name of all the horses that have died in the Grand National since 1999 so if people could wear black or dark colours that would be good but this is optional.

After this demo we will be going to Channel Four for a demonstration there. Channel Four is promoting and broadcasting the Grand National and we will be calling on them to stop supporting animal cruelty give full and proper coverage of all horse injuries and deaths at the Grand National meet. See following meetup for details.

On Saturday 6th April there were two demonstrations in London against the Grand National.

The first demonstration took place at a branch of William Hill and was to urge people not to place bets on the Grand National, as many people who wouldn’t normally bet on horseracing have a ‘harmless flutter’ on this event. This in turn would help to stop bookmakers from making money out of this race. It was a lively demo with the chanting of slogans such as “Grand National, What a disgrace – How many horses die in the race?” “William Hill – You Kill” and “You Bet – They Die”. The protestors held placards and handed out leaflets to passers-by outlining the cruelty involved in the Grand National and horse racing in general.

Is it ok to bring children and a dog to this demo or is it maybe not appropriate?

    • Robert

      I don't see a problem with that Jessica :-)
