Anti-Fur Protest At Harvey Nichols, London, As They Start Selling Fur

Another London protest will take place from 12-4pm outside Harvey Nichols 109 - 125 Knightsbridge, London, SW1X 7RJ on Saturday 28th September.

Nearest tube is Knightsbridge (Sloane Street exit). For protests in other cities contact CAFT.

Placards and leaflets will be provided.

Almost 10 years after they agreed to stop selling fur, the department
store chain Harvey Nichols has decided to drop its ethical fur-free policy.

Following a campaign in 2004, Harvey Nichols' Company Director said: "The
board has today reviewed the company's fur policy and has decided going
forward that we will no longer stock real fur items."

In an email to CAFT yesterday, their Press and Marketing Director wrote:
"I can confirm that our buyers have bought fur trimmed products for this
season. We have taken this opportunity to review our fur policy and from
this season onwards we will be stocking fur trimmed products. The fur
used is ethically sourced and humanely farmed."

It is vitally important to take action on this, Harvey Nichols is very
influential in the world of fashion. If Harvey Nichols gets away with
it, other department stores and fashion chains are likely to follow.
Department stores are much more important and influential than
individual shops in the fashion retail trade.

Please contact Harvey Nichols by email, phone, post and/or fax. Tell
them about the horrors of the fur trade and ask them to reinstate their
fur free policy. If you want to write to all the emails at once, copy
and paste the block list underneath all the addresses. To contact the
stores individually, see below.

We are plannning protests at their stores across the UK. Their stores
are in London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds,
Dublin, and Liverpool. We are starting with a co-ordinated day of action
on Saturday 21st September, with protests at stores in cities across the
country. If you want to take part in protests, please contact us for
details of your nearest event.

About 30 anti-fur campaigners protested outside the main entrance of the Knightsbridge store with a banner which read “Heartless Harvey Nichols”. They handed out flyers urging people to boycott the store and contact them to re-introduce their ethical fur free policy. Powerful speeches were made over the megaphone to let people know about the horrors of the fur trade. Many members of the public were shocked by the images on the banner and leaflets and expresses support for the campaign with some turning away at the entrance. The protest were so eye catching and lively that at least two members of the public who were passing by stopped what they were doing and joined us. This is the start of a National campaign and there will be protests at the London Harvey Nichols Store most Saturdays, with another one being held this Saturday as advertised on this meetup site.

To contact Harvey Nichols to ask them to re-introduce their fur free policy see http://www.caft.org.uk/HN/index.html

I'm sorry I can't make it this time. Great work from you guys, keep it up. I am campaigning with all my friends and soon to be not - Hampstead based desperate housewives....you get the picture, it's hard work, I'm surrounded by Cruellas De Vils, it beggars belief, quite shocking and disheartening.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
