VOLUNTEER DAY at The Retreat Animal Rescue in Ashford

Dear friends of the animals,

The Volunteer Days at the animal sanctuaries have proved to be both popular and enjoyable for people who like the interaction with the animals and therefore I would like to extend the experience out to a second sanctuary I also work with who are in desperate need of help. Starting in January 2014 of the 3rd Sunday of every month.

The Retreat Animal Rescue is a vegan run sanctuary that cares for over 1,000 animals at any one time and offers much needed support to all animals - farmed, domestic and wild. Their aims are to educate the public that all animals need commitment, love and respect.

The Retreat is a rescue centre which saves tormented, abused, sick, injured and unwanted animals from certain death. Some of their residents include: ex-race horses, ex-riding school ponies, injured live export sheep, cows saved from slaughter, ex-petting farm goats, injured birds, ferrets, Christmas turkeys, worn-out battery hens, disabled non-releasable wildlife, fish, small domestics, old or feral and FIV cats, and dogs who have failed behaviour tests in other dog homes.

Billy Thompson is the founder of the centre and has devoted his life to the cause.
More information can be found here: http://www.retreatanimalrescue.org.uk/

There is always lots to do including feeding, mucking out and/or doing any other sanctuary ad hoc task. You will need wellies, a change of clothing and GLOVES (working gloves probably best). This is also an opportunity to meet like minded people.
Please bring food/snack or pot luck to share during your break (this is a vegan place therefore vegan food would be preferred). Coffee and tea is usually provided in the volunteer kitchen.

The plan is to Meet at Charing Cross station at 9.10 - by the ticket office.
The fare to Ashford is considerably dearer than Paddock Wood but I hope this will not put everyone off.
The return fare is £26.30pp (yikes!) but reduced to £13.15 with a GROUP DISCOUNT for four people. Please encourage friends to join you.

TRAIN TIMES
Dep 09:38 London Charing Cross
Arr. 10:58 Ashford International
Dep 16:33 Ashford International
Arr. 17:52 London Charing Cross
A GROUP discount for 4 people is available on this route £52.60 which works out at £13.15 per person.

If driving, the journey is fairly straight forward and parking is available at the sanctuary.

Unfortunately, the animal ambulance can only accommodate two people so lifts from the station are not possible and would suggest a shared taxi or relying on the goodwill of driving volunteers to pick up from the station.

Final reminder - volunteer day at Retreat Animal Rescue is tomorrow, so far we are 5 (one car load) if anyone else is going please let me know.

The weather is meant to be good tomorrow so hopefully we can get a lot done. The recent weather has hit hard everywhere so any help is welcome.

    A very rewarding day.

Thank you for caring for the animals.

Is anyone driving from London this time that I can share a lift with and split petrol money?
Not being funny and I know it is rarely an issue but I need to mention that I would not be able to travel in a car with anyone who smokes in the car while they drive (a few ppl still do this which I know MOST would not do even if they smoke sometimes!).
I need to mention this now to avoid any unpleasantness on the day, if I do not know the person/people I am travelling with. I am rather hoping that Chris will drive there again, as I am happy to travel in his car which I'd have done last month if I'd been well enough to come along!
I felt so sad about pulling out last month.. I am not usually so unreliable honestly!

Due to Robb's continued failure to respond I have put up a link to this page on a new discussion thread on the London Vegan Meet Up group, as a way to get the message out to the members that more help is needed on Sunday.

Dear all, Nico and I are driving from hanger lane station, west london central line. We are already taking 2 people - Lesley and June, have potentially room for one more person that may wish to come.
Please get in touch if that is the case.

I will check the Facebook page to see if there is anyone going by train or anyone else driving.

I am quite keen on helping regularly but before I can say I am a definite yes, I would like to see how things work out on January's visit (as it is quite a long journey)

any help is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately the retreat suffered storm damage a week ago and also some casualties as a result so any help is appreciated.
