VOLUNTEER DAY at The Retreat Animal Rescue in Ashford

Dear friends of the animals,

The Volunteer Days at the animal sanctuaries have proved to be both popular and enjoyable for people who like the interaction with the animals and therefore I would like to extend the experience out to a second sanctuary I also work with who are in desperate need of help. Starting in January 2014 on the 3rd Sunday of every month.

The Retreat Animal Rescue is a vegan run sanctuary that cares for over 1,000 animals at any one time and offers much needed support to all animals - farmed, domestic and wild. Their aims are to educate the public that all animals need commitment, love and respect.

The Retreat is a rescue centre which saves tormented, abused, sick, injured and unwanted animals from certain death. Some of their residents include: ex-race horses, ex-riding school ponies, injured live export sheep, cows saved from slaughter, ex-petting farm goats, injured birds, ferrets, Christmas turkeys, worn-out battery hens, disabled non-releasable wildlife, fish, small domestics, old or feral and FIV cats, and dogs who have failed behaviour tests in other dog homes.

Billy Thompson is the founder of the centre and has devoted his life to the cause.
More information can be found here: http://www.retreatanimalrescue.org.uk/

There is always lots to do including feeding, mucking out and/or doing any other sanctuary ad hoc task. You will need wellies, a change of clothing and GLOVES (working gloves probably best). This is also an opportunity to meet like minded people.
Please bring food/snack or pot luck to share during your break (this is a vegan place therefore vegan food would be preferred). Coffee and tea is usually provided in the volunteer kitchen.

The plan is to Meet at Charing Cross station at 9.10 - by the ticket office.
The fare to Ashford is considerably dearer than Paddock Wood but I hope this will not put everyone off.
The return fare is £26.30pp (yikes!) but reduced to £13.15 with a GROUP DISCOUNT for four people. Please encourage friends to join you.

TRAIN TIMES
Dep 09:38 London Charing Cross
Arr. 10:58 Ashford International

Dep 16:33 Ashford International
Arr. 17:52 London Charing Cross
A GROUP discount for 4 people is available on this route £52.60 which works out at £13.15 per person.

If driving, the journey is fairly straight forward and parking is available at the sanctuary.
The Retreat Animal Rescue, Brickyard Farm, Cripple Hill, High Halden, Kent TN26 3LJ

Unfortunately, the animal ambulance can only accommodate two people so lifts from the station are not possible and would suggest a shared taxi or relying on the goodwill of driving volunteers to pick up from the station.

Thanks so much to Liz for giving me a lift to and from Leatherhead. We eventually got to the station even with the sat nav.

What a fantastic group of people! The homemade vegan food was amazing! Imagine having homemade vegan cheese that tastes even better than real Mozzarela. Thanks for that Cathy - I will definitely buy that book. If anyone was thinking of going vegetarian, they only have to volunteer to come to this retreat and meet the animals. I took quite a few animal breaks seeing the goats, pigs, dogs, cats and birds in between mucking out- what a welcome from all the animals. Thanks so much Billy for taking an unwanted Cockerel in and giving him a big kiss on his arrival at his new home. Love this place and wish I could have stayed longer. I will come back again and again . . . . and again!

Mollie, yes we can pick you up no problem. You don't need to contribute to petrol. It's only an old banger of a car with many rattles and smells of dog, so be warned. Let us know what time your train gets in.

    • Elaine

Oh, okay. I wonder was it the old banger or the dog smell? lol. No worries. See you tomorrow.

Sunday 20th is EASTER SUNDAY - although at the Retreat every day is the same as all animals need feeding, mucking out and looking after, I realise for those who live a fairly normal life may want to spend it with family.

Those who have the 4 days off over Easter may find the time to make it to Retreat as you get a chance to recover Monday?

I will schedule an additional session in April the Sunday before, 13th, for anyone who cant do Easter.

Thank you all for your support.
