Sakuracon 2013 Meet and Greet

I thought I'd put up this meetup so that folks could plan their schedules for Sakuracon weekend, in case meetup members wanted to meet each other for lunches, particular panels or other special events.  We do have a confirmed panel time and location as well:  see below!

As always, if you're a member and never been able to make it to a meet before, Sakuracon is a great time to meet some of your fellow fans--and if you're a regular, or even just thought about joining the group but never quite made the leap, please drop by and say 'hi'. :D

Panel details:  our panel will be on Sunday, 10:15-11:15 am, in room 206! My panels are usually pretty unstructured, we mostly just use the time to get together, introduce ourselves, make friends and talk about what we like. I'm also hoping we will be able to recruit more interest from the local community, and possibly suggestions for future meetups as well.  Depending on timing, the group can also go out to lunch afterwards if people are interested.  But as always, if anyone has any ideas of what we might do to spice things up, feel free to let me know!

A side note: to attend this meetup, you will have to pay to get into Sakuracon, and unfortunately they no longer sell day passes due to attendance limits--registration is $55.00 before March 5th, or $60 at the door. You will definitely get your money's worth, tho! Also, as experienced con-goers might already know, panel schedules tend to change at the last minute--so make sure to keep an eye on the posted signs and whatnot, and I'll do my best to send out an e-mail if it looks like our panel has been shifted to a different room or time.

I hope to see you all there!

Like Micha said, y'all "looked SOOOO AWESOME!!!!!" I counted 16 of you cosplaying from Okami; impressive and inspiring! I've uploaded the 8 most share-worthy photos I have. The panel was chatty/fun, and informative. Looking forward to hanging out again soon :-)

Although we had less people than we did last year, so would anyone be interested in doing some kind of parade with sign fare next year in order to promote our panel/group? I know we are pretty sizable already, so I'm not sure if this is something we would want to be a priority, but I thought I would throw it out there just in cases. ^_^

I DO think it is pretty great that even if no one came to our panel, we'd still have a great time hanging out all together in a private panel room for an hour or so! :D I love you ladies! <3

This is not an official meetup event, but just an FYI for those who may be interested in Japanese fashion: on Sunday March 31 (last day of Sakuracon), from 11am to 4pm, there will be a few Japanese clothing brands setting up shop at Westlake Center. They're doing it for an event called "Kawaii-Girls' Party". (Corny title, I know.)

This is NOT a Sakuracon-affiliated event, so you can get in without a badge, and you can go in and out any time during those 5 hours. A disclaimer, though: I'm not very familiar with the company/blog that organizes it, so it could turn out to be either absolutely awesome or a total bust. I suspect this event is why several shops were walled off in white barriers for the past week or so.

The public facebook event for it is: https://www.facebook.com/events/520754411289696/

Okay, I checked it out, and they don't have anything. Just an outdoor fashion show and 2 booths. Apparently it was poorly planned.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself really quick--my name is Lynae (obviously) and I am an anime fan (also obvious :)
I have been a big fan of anime since I was a little kid. I watched Pokemon as a kid but my first non-children's anime was Evangelion which I watched with a neighbor boy in middle school.

I am really excited about the con, I am going to be dressed up as Madoka from Puella Magi Madoka Magica! If you see me don't be shy, feel free to say hi and chat!

Welcome to the group! I hope you can make it to the panel--but even if you can't, feel free to stop by my table and say hi! Just look for RHPotter in the artist alley! :)

      March 24, 2013

    • Micha Monet V.

Hi Lynae! Welcome! I hope we see you at the Con - just look for a bunch of people dressed as characters from the game O-kami!! ^_^

Just a reminder for everyone--I scheduled this meetup to cover the entire con weekend, but our actual panel isn't until Sunday morning at 10:15. However, don't let that stop you guys from getting together at other events--I know Sakuracon is huge, but if there are specific panels/events you're attending, and you want to know if any other SWAG members will be there, leave a comment--you never know! For instance, I know I intend to try to go to the AMV contest at 6 pm on Friday. Anyone else like to come with? :D Also, while I won't be available to do our usual post-panel lunch, I thought it might be fun for those of us that are still around to do a post-con dinner of some kind--I should be free from Artist Alley at around 5 pm on Sunday (hopefully teardown won't take much longer than that). Would anyone else be interested in getting together to celebrate surviving the con?

Avalon mentioned that her restaurant (Portage Bay) would LOVE to have us there for a late brunch after our SWAG Panel. Alternatively, we discussed the possibility of going to brunch on Saturday at Revel (http://www.revelseatt...). Brunch is served between 10am - 2pm on weekends only.

FYI, I'm adding this food discussion to our FB SWAG page as well.

FYI the schedule is now up: http://www.sakuracon.org/programming/schedule.php

Also, still looking for staff if you haven't bought your badge yet and need to save money. Staff work 16 hours and it covers the cost of admission. Hours can be from Thursday noon to teardown Sunday. Details on the website.

Hey guys: So for my SakuraCon staffing info I need to be on duty a lot of the con so can we please plan for SATURDAY to be our day to kind of wander around cosplayed together?

    February 26, 2013

    • Rebecca P.

I'm planning on wearing my costume both Saturday and Sunday, barring wardrobe malfunctions--gotta show off Claudia's great work! I have no problems with people getting together on Saturday, but since after-panel group photoshoots worked so well last year, I would suggest that the folks who want them should try for Sunday as well?

Just to let everyone know--I'll be in Artist Alley for most of the con, but I'll definitely be taking time out to do the panel, plus hopefully a few Okami photoshoots with the group. And I have my table assignment now--so if you get the chance, drop on by table #518 and say hi! :D

As a side note--anyone out there in meetup-land ever sold at an artist alley before? Is a banner essential for making sure people notice your table? I'm dithering over whether I want to spend the money to have one made for my very first show or not ... what do you guys think?
