Tricks to being a successful RPG Game Master

This meetup is for players who want to be a GM and are looking for the tricks and methods to becoming a great Game Master.   There are many players who say, "I want to DM, if only I new how."  This is your chance to get the inside scoop on DMing.  This event will be personalized somewhat to the needs of those that participate.  So if you aren't sure how to create bad guys, a storyline, or make the player characters suffer in agony, then this is the event to go to.  This is like a Dr Evil training session.  We are showing you ways to be evil to the characters.

My hope is that part of the event will be to help everyone create a short 30 minute adventure and then run it and see what it is like to be on the other side of the DM screen.

Topics covered include:

Accessing difficulty level

Building storyline

Length of Story

Transitioning to different scenes

Handling difficult players

Creating the boss

Creating minions

Off track storyline

Using maps

Using NPC's

3D sets

Using mini's

Real props

Pictures

Fight, fight and more fight

Passing out clues

Pushing the party forward

Rules handling and management

Building in randomness

Creating excitement

Creating fear

Killing player characters

Resurrecting player characters

and much more

Your future as DM awaits you (insert creepy music here)

Roll a 20,

Dennis

This was a very successful Meetup. It was a great blend of experienced GMs and those starting out as GMs. The experiences shared were valuable to all. I think I am going to have a part II in the spring that looks at using miniatures, making sets, and painting both.

Here's something called "Tips for Building Your GM Notebook" that might be of help to some DMs:

    http://www.gnomestew.com/treasuretables/organization-2/tips-for-building-your-gm-notebook/

Within the blog post is a link to a 62 page PDF that provides instructions and examples for compiling and maintaining your own campaign notebook.

I'd like to make it to the meeting on the 11th but that's the date of my sister's wedding. I'll try to make it to this after my dentist appointment, just to lurk. I've never played D&D but have always had a casual interest.

I am hoping my new dragon head will be finished and mounted on the front of my garage by Saturday so there will no confusion as to which house is mine.

I updated the event with a better description. I am hoping that this event will be about the novice and helping them develop the skills to be a good DM.

As long as I am not working I'll be there. I will be dragging my wife along no mater how much she kicks and screams.

There will be a lot of advice, but one of the easiest things you can do is listen to actual play podcasts. You can get a feel for how other GM's run games while you mow the lawn!
