Sunset hike in the Berkeley Hills (with waterfall and walk through Tilden Park)

  • Let's meetup for another after-work hike through the Berkeley Hills. We will hike/walk/climb for about 2 1/2 hours. We'll explore a secret canyon and waterfall, go up to Tilden Park, and then enjoy the sunset from a perfect spot above the Berkeley Hall of Science. We may get views or we may get fog... I never know what the Bay Area weather gods have in store for us. We'll go at my usual leisurely pace, but be prepared to sweat - the hike is steep with several back-to-back staircases.

If you haven't been at one of the urban hikes before, expect to be impressed. The East Bay Hills are crisscrossed by many pedestrian-only paths. They offer great views of the Bay and of people's backyards, decks, and gardens :) Most paths are steep and have LOTS of stairs.  If you hate taking the stairs when the escalator is out, this hike is not for you. We will sweat and climb quite a bit.

[Side note: If you're interested in exploring these paths on your own, I mapped some routes here: http://goo.gl/maps/ceUUl. Feel free to print them out and explore. This meetup follows the cyan route.]

I suppose I should let you know that the waterfall is on private property. There are well-established trails on the property and word has it that the owner doesn't mind polite trespassers. I am keeping the meetup group small for this exact reason.

Please no dogs on this hike, unless you don't mind waiting out the waterfall part. If you hiked with me before you know I love doggies, but I'm not comfortable bringing them onto the section where we're trespassing as it is. Not sure how the folks living there feel about dogs.  If you choose to bring your pooch, please know that many sections of the route are along the street pavement as some streets up in the hills are narrow and without sidewalks.  Please be mindful of cars and keep dogs leashed at all times.

Bring lots of water for you (and your pooch if she's coming), sunblock/sunglasses/hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

My phone number is posted above, by the event location. Please call/text/email or post a comment here if you have any questions about the meetup.

Sorry, there are no restrooms at the trailhead or anywhere else along the way. Please plan accordingly.

    MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS

We will meet at Euclid and Eunice Ave, close to the Berkeley Rose Garden. You can park on the street - no meters or any other restrictions. Please look up directions ahead of time and be realistic about traffic, work commitments, etc... In other words, don't sign up unless you know you can make it. We will only wait a few minutes past the posted start time. Please be on time and update your RSVP if plans change.

Waitlist info: This event has a 'manual' waitlist. This means that when a spot opens up, everyone on the waiting list will receive an email. In order to claim the spot, you must visit the meetup site and RSVP "yes". So watch your email closely. This approach avoids unintentional no-shows and ensures that the people who move up to "attending" are indeed available and interested.
If you're on the waitlist, there's a good chance you can snag a spot the day of; last minute cancellations are common on after-work hikes.

Hi everyone. I am cancelling this hike because there's still a 50% chance of rain in the evening. I'd rather cancel than risk getting rained on during the hike and have to cut short. I will try to reschedule next week. Sorry and thanks for your understanding.

Hi all. FYI - as of now there is a 50% chance of rain tomorrow evening. I WILL CANCEL if it's raining. If I end up cancelling, I will do so by 4pm. My apologies in advance if that ruins your evening, but I hope you understand since I am but a mere mortal with no control over the weather.
Please have a plan B for your evening, just in case the weather gods don't favor us tomorrow.

Just in case it's no clear: this meetup has a "manual waitlist". Anytime someone drops out, ALL the people on the waitlist will get an email saying that a spot opened up. Just because you got the email, doesn't mean you're in. You have to follow the instructions in the email, go to the event site, and change your status from 'waitlist' to 'going'. Whoever is first to respond to that email and change their status on the event site will grab said open spot.

I recognize this is a popular hike. For this reason, I post it a couple of times a month. We'll keep going back here as long as there's water in the creek and the waterfall is still going. So don't despair if you don't get in this time. They'll be another opportunity soon.
