Sunset & full moon hike in Tilden Park

Let's check out the sunset and the full moon from the top of Wildcat Peak!  This is a beautiful route with a gorgeous rest spot at the top - perfect for dinner and a sunset show.  We will reach the top about an hour into the hike and then have dinner/snacks/wine while watching the sun set (7:55pm) and the full moon rise (8:08pm).  We may get fog or we may get views, I never know what the Bay Area weather gods have in store for us.  Here's hoping for a clear night.

The outing will take us about 3 hours - depends how long we linger at dinner.  We should be back at the cars by 9:30 pm at the latest.  Please bring a working headlamp or flashlight. But come anyway, even if you don't have one.  I have a couple of extras I can loan to folks. On a clear night the moon will help us out, too.

The route is about 3.5 miles; we will head up beautiful but challenging Laurel Canyon and come back via the Wildcat Peak trail.  Total elevation gain is about 1000 feet with a tough uphill pretty much all the way to our dinner spot.  The distance is short, but I consider this hike moderately strenuous because of the steepness.

Please bring dinner and 2L of water.  Wear good hiking shoes and layers (it's usually windy and chilly at the dinner spot). I want you to be warm and comfy while we're hanging out at dinner - bring a hat and gloves and a warm jacket or whatever you need to stay warm up there (your +1 and red wine works, too :)

We'll be going on narrow trails. Please wear long pants to minimize exposure to poison oak. Also, bring bug spray if you have it.

My hikes tend to be at a slower pace than most meetups so we can enjoy the scenery and the conversation. Fast-pace hikers are welcome to join and run ahead - all I ask is that you please wait at all trail intersections esp. if you're not familiar with the route.

Restrooms are available at the trailhead parking lot.

Sorry, no dogs on these trails :(

MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS

Please use the meetup map or this google map to get directions to the meeting spot: http://goo.gl/maps/k5Cqh

We will meet in a dirt parking lot, just to the right of the gate BEFORE the large paved lot at the end of Central Park Drive.  Please park in the small dirt lot BEFORE THE GATE - don't go past the gate as it closes early each evening and I don't want our cars to be locked in overnight.  If the dirt lot is full, there is plenty of extra parking close by on Central Park Drive.

Please get directions ahead of time so you can be on time. Do not rely on your phone to navigate up there. The Berkeley hills are notorious for unreliable cell service. I will not wait at the trailhead for more than a few minutes past the posted start time. I am timing the hike to watch the sunset at the top.

Listen up waitlisters. I changed the waitlist settings to "manual".

The RSVP limit for this event is 25 people. So when the number of sign-ups drops below 25, everyone on the waitlist will get an email. To snag the open spot, come to the event page as soon as you see the email and manually change your RSVP from "Waitlist" to "Attending". The spots are given out on a first-come first-served basis so if you come to the page but Meetup doesn't let you change your RSVP to "Attending" it means someone else got to it first. Be patient and check you inbox for more openings; multiple spots usually open the day of as last-minute obligations force many to drop out.

This approach for assigning last-minute open spots cuts down on unintentional no-shows and ensures that people who sign up are still interested and can make it even at the eleventh hour.
