Upper Rockridge evening hike

Let's go on another after work hike - this one in the Oakland Hills for a change. We'll meet at Lake Temescal, walk the trail that skirts this beautiful lake, and then hike/walk/climb on pedestrian paths and stairways through the Rockridge Hills neighborhood. The hike is about 2 hours, ~4mi, with ~700ft elevation gain.  The last part of the hike will be in the dark - bring a flashlight if you got it. Come anyway even if you don't have one, I always bring a few extras with me. ***This is not a dinner hike. No need to bring a picnic dinner with you.***

If you haven't been at one of the urban hikes before, expect to be impressed. The East Bay neighborhoods are crisscrossed by many beautiful pedestrian-only paths. The paths offer great views of the Bay and of people's backyards, decks and gardens :)  We may get views or we may get fog I never know what the Bay Area weather gods have in store for us. Here's hoping for a clear evening.

Most paths are steep and have LOTS of stairs. If you hate taking the stairs when the escalator is out, this hike is not for you. We tend to go slower than most meetups/exercise groups so we can enjoy the views and the conversation, but we will still sweat and climb quite a bit on this particular route.

[Side note: If you're interested in exploring these paths on your own, I mapped some Oakland routes here: http://goo.gl/maps/FSR1z. Feel free to print them out and explore. This event will roughly follow the dark purple/blue route.]

Well-behaved doggies are welcome to join. Please keep them leashed at all times as not everyone in the group is comfortable around dogs.

Bring lots of water for you (and your pooch), sunblock/sunglasses/hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Restrooms are available at the starting point.

MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS

We'll meet at Lake Temescal, in the big parking lot at the North end of the lake. The address is 6500 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94618. Parking is free.

Look it up ahead of time so you show up at the right spot. The North parking lot is off Broadway, the South one is off Broadway Terrace. You are looking for the North lot, so you should drive in from Broadway, NOT from Broadway Terrace.  Lots of people get confused (understandably so).  If you end up at the wrong lot, stay there and give me a call.  We'll come to you! Do not attempt to drive around the neighborhood - it's a hilly maze full of freeway on/off ramps. Not worth trying to navigate through if you're not familiar with the area.

If you click on "Lake Temescal North Entrance" at the top of the event, a map will open up so you can get directions.  It should look something like this:

Please look up directions ahead of time so you can be on time! We will only wait a few minutes past the posted start time. Please update your RSVP if plans change.

My phone number is posted above, by the event location. Please call/text/email or post a comment here if you have any questions about the meetup.

Thanks everyone for a very fun evening! I loved exploring this beautiful neighborhood in your wonderful company. Thank you Jermaine, Maz, and Cristina for sharing the wine and snacks with us :) Despite the shenanigans, we managed to hike for 4.1miles and climb 735 feet! Woo-hoo! Go us :)

Alina, I had an awful experience trying to pick up some photos for a project for Open House tomorrow. I tried to make it, but ya'll were gone. My friend and I walked in the area, hoping we might run into you, but we didn't. We were back at our cars by 8. So sorry to have missed you. I really had planned for enough time, but the people at Walgreens sent me on a wild goose chase. Hope you had a great walk!

Listen up waitlisters. I changed the waitlist settings to "manual".

The RSVP limit for this event is 15 people. So when the number of sign-ups drops below 15, everyone on the waitlist will get an email. To snag the open spot, come to the event page as soon as you see the email and manually change your RSVP from "Waitlist" to "Attending". The spots are given out on a first-come first-served basis so if you come to the page but Meetup doesn't let you change your RSVP to "Attending" it means someone else got to it first. Be patient and check you inbox for more openings; multiple spots usually open the day of as last-minute obligations force many to drop out.

This approach for assigning last-minute open spots cuts down on unintentional no-shows and ensures that people who sign up are still interested and can make it even at the eleventh hour.
