El Cerrito 'Missing Link' Hike

  • Mar 28, 2014 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This hike is not for everyone: you need a trailblazing spirit, patience, and good hiking shoes.  We'll hike through two El Cerrito Hills parks AND through the undeveloped "missing link" open space property that connects/divides the two.  The path through the missing link hillside is very narrow and at times rather steep and treacherous.  We're basically making our own trail. It's true that you won't need a machete and if I can do it, you can, too, but still... you've been warned.  Don't expect a well-groomed fireroad.

Part of the hike is after sunset, but by then we'll be done with the narrow footpaths and we'll be back on wide, easy to navigate trails.  On a clear evening we'll have great sunset views and we'll enjoy the twinkling city lights below.  The views are fantastic, the company always fun, so I hope you'll take on this challenge :)

The hike is short, but steep. We'll go about 3 miles and 1,500ft elev gain.  It's steep both on the way up and and on the way down.  Good hiking shoes are a must.   If you hiked with me before you know we tend to go slower than most exercise meetup groups so we can enjoy the scenery and the conversation.  We'll be mindful of the steep narrow trails and we'll probably go even slower than usual.  Fast hikers are welcome to join, all I ask is that you please wait for us at all trail junctions.

Bring - water, snacks, long pants, long sleeve shirt, good hiking shoes, headlamp or flashlight if you have one (or borrow one from me, I always bring extras for the group).

Restrooms - Sorry but there are no restrooms by the meeting spot or anywhere else along our route.  Plan ahead.

Dogs - although you can bring dogs here, I don't recommend it.  The trails are too darn narrow and I'm not sure your pooch will have a good time.  That being said, you know your pet better than anyone so if you two are up for the challenge, by all means bring him along.  Please keep him on leash, though, not everyone in the group is comfortable around dogs.

Kids - you can always bring kids on my hikes. I trust that you read the event description and can tell whether this would be a fun experience for them.

Attendance Note - if you sign up to attend, you will be counted on to show up. So please keep your RSVP up to date to reflect your intentions to join us. All members who do not show up will be recorded as a NO SHOW in the system. Members with 3 or more No Shows will be removed from the group.

Questions? - as always, my number is posted above under the event location.  Please call/text/email should you have any questions about our hike.

MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS

We will meet at entrance to the El Cerrito Natural Hillside Area.  There is free street parking on Schmidt Lane and the area is not busy.  You won't have a problem finding parking.

Please look up directions ahead of time so you can be on time... We will only wait a few minutes past the posted start time.

      2 things:
      1) The El Cerrito trail map is here: http://ectrailtrekker... It's not the best map (no mileage) but if you want to come back and walk on your own it's better than relying on memory alone. We started off on 32-to-30-to[masked]-17. Then we walked on Navallier St to 29, 31 and back to 32. A description of the trail numbers is here: http://ectrailtrekker...
All in all it was about 3 miles and 850 ft elev gain according to my tracking app.

Hi all. We're on tomorrow rain or shine.

    March 27, 2014

    • Alina

But beware that I cancelled last time and in the end the weather was nice. So it figures that it will rain tomorrow since I'm not cancelling this time.
Come prepared for wet weather, just in case murphy's law follows me around...

    Poison oak??

    March 16, 2014

    • Alina

I was there today to check on trail conditions and poison oak. Didn't see any on the narrow paths, but saw some on the edge of the regular trails. Still a good idea to wear long pants and long sleeve shirt.
