Sunset&dinner hike in Tilden Park

Let's do another 'dinner and sunset show' hike, this time in Tilden Park.

Hike - a 3.5-mile loop with 700ft elevation gain.  The route includes a scenic portion of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. We'll go up a tough hill pretty much all the way to the top where we'll take a break to have dinner and watch the sunset over the Bay (7:47p).  There are benches and a picnic table making this a good rest stop.  We'll enjoy panoramic views from the Golden Gate to Mount Diablo.  Keep your fingers crossed for a clear night!  We should be back at the cars around 9pm, depends how long we take at dinner.  If you hiked with me before, you know we tend to go slower than most meetups so we can enjoy the scenery and the conversation. Fast-pace hikers are welcome to join and run ahead - all I ask is that you please wait at all trail intersections esp. during night hikes!

Bring - water, dinner, sturdy hiking shoes, layers (it's usually windy and chilly at the dinner spot), and a working headlamp or flashlight if you have one. Come anyway, even if you don't have one.  I always bring extras for the group.

Restrooms - there's a restroom at the parking lot.  No other restrooms on the trail.

Dogs - trails are dog-friendly, but please keep dogs leashed as not everyone in the group is comfortable around dogs.

Kids - you can always bring kids on my hikes. I trust that you read the event description and can tell whether this would be a fun experience for them.

Attendance Note - if you sign up to attend, you will be counted on to show up. So please keep your RSVP up to date to reflect your intentions to join us. All members who do not show up will be recorded as a 'no show' in the system. Members with 3 or more No Shows will be removed from the group.

Questions? - as always, my number is posted above under the event location.  Please call/text/email or post a comment here should you have any questions about our hike.

We will meet at the Padre Picnic Area -  a paved lot along South Park Drive.  Parking is free.  FYI - some maps say that South Park Drive is closed in April, but it's closed only up until April 1.  It is now open!

The Padre Picnic Area is labeled in Google Maps if you zoom in enough (and the big paved lot is clearly visible in satellite view). The GPS coordinates are[masked], -122.234.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look up or ask me for directions ahead of time. It sucks getting lost in Tilden with no cell reception (been there, done that).  We will only wait a few minutes past the posted start time. I am timing this to watch the sunset at the top.

Great hike! Uploaded photos. I also wrote a blog post about it, for those who weren't able to attend the hike. You can read it here:

Those are great pics! I was drawn to the rafting boats, but you captured lovely views of the mountains.

Thank you all for coming and sharing this beautiful, if chilly, evening with me. I had a great time. If you want to do this on your own, you can park at the Big Spring trailhead. The loop is about 3 miles w 700ft elev gain.

Thanks for organizing the hike and letting me carpool with you Alina. The cooler weather definitely didnt dampen my mood. I totally enjoy the walk in the dark, seeing the beautiful sunset, and company with others with a cup of wine or two. Until next time.

If this is an absolute deal breaker for you, please speak up. I can stop by Walgreens on my way and grab a few.
