Urban hike in the Berkeley Hills

I can't imagine a better way to spend a day off than going on a hike. If you're lucky to have MLK day off (and yet you're not in Tahoe), let's meetup for a glute-buster hike through the hills of Berkeley. We will hike/walk/climb at a leisurely pace for about 7+ miles and 1000+ feet elevation gain.  We will have a picnic lunch about 2 hours into the hike.  Please pack a lunch and snacks.  The hike will take about 5 hours, depends how long we take at lunch and at the many vista points along the way.

If you haven't explored the Berkeley Hills before, expect to be impressed. It's an old, charming neighborhood crisscrossed by beautiful pedestrian-only paths. The paths offer great views of the Bay and of people's backyards, decks, and gardens :) We will explore many hidden parks and also go to Indian Rock for sweeping views of the Bay. It's a really fun experience and a very different one from our usual routes on Tilden's trails.

Most paths are steep and have LOTS of stairs. Think Telegraph Hill a few times over.  Our glutes will get quite a workout. The stairs and the views may leave some of us gasping for air :) If you have trouble taking the stairs when the escalator is out, this hike is not for you.  That being said, if you're a fast hiker, this hike is not for you either.  There is no marked trail to follow.  You can't just run ahead and meet us later....Like it or not, you're stuck with our leisurely-paced group :)

Please no dogs on this hike.

MEETING SPOT AND DIRECTIONS

We will meet at Live Oak Park, by Shattuck and Berryman.  It's a 20-min walk from Downtown Berkeley Bart.

If you're driving, please give yourself 10 extra minutes to find parking.  It's a residential neighborhood, but residential permits and 2-hour parking restrictions are not enforced on the holiday.  Parking meters are not enforced either.

My phone number is posted above, by the event location.  Please call/text/email or post a comment here if you have any questions about the meetup.

Please be on time.  We will only wait a few minutes past the posted start time. That being said, I don't mind waiting as long as you let me know you're on your way.  So please call/text me if you're running late.  Otherwise I will assume you're a no-show and we will take off without you.

Please update your RSVP if your plans change.

Here are some pictures of what to expect along the way:

If you're interested in exploring the Berkeley Hills on your own, I mapped some routes here: http://goo.gl/maps/fYJup. The routes at this link are about 3 miles each and take about 2 hours. The route we took today was a combo route not mapped there. But feel free to print these out or create your own combo routes :) Happy trails and have fun exploring!

I'd like to come for the first half and leave after lunch if that's possible. How far will the lunch spot be from our meeting spot if I take the most direct walk back?

Hi Lauren. You can take off at any point. From the hills it's about 20 to 30 minute walk back on a direct route. Just make sure your phone is charged and you have a good map app. The streets are very twisted up there and some have no signs... A map app will be very helpful for finding your way back.
