Intro to Mobile App Development for Web Developers (using PhoneGap)

This workshop is designed for web developers and/or enthusiasts who want to get into mobile Mobile App development for the iOS (iPhone/iPad) and/or Android platform and don't have much programming experience a desire to learn the native programming techniques. Web developers who are already familiar with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other traditional Web programming techniques will be able to see how they can apply their skills to mobile app development.

Demos of PhoneGap as well as other tools and APIs will be introduced, previewed and explored. Participants should walk away from this workshop with a good set of tools and information they can apply to their next mobile app development project. Hopefully some web developers will also generate some new ideas about how they can build mobile apps using the web development skills, like HTML and JavaScript, they already have without having to learn native app development techniques.

Note: There is a $10 charge (per attendee) for this meetup so that I can get an accurate head count to guarantee everyone gets a comfortable seat and room to breathe and work. I will use the proceeds to get pizza, waters and soda for the event. :)

If you change your mind, want to give up your seat and want a refund before the event, please do this at least 3 days before the event. This way someone else can go in your place. I can't refund anyone AFTER the event happens. Thanks.

    Interesting.
I was interested in how we would cache data, do local storage, use an API, or otherwise save data between sessions for these apps. You said you had an alternate version of the ToDo list that has the code for storing data. Could you post a link to it?
    Thank you.

Hi, I might be about an hour late. Is it still worth it to come?

    June 21

    • Barbara H.

First two hours will be spent going over "how to" stuff. Last hour spent troubleshooting issues and working one on one. I'm not sure what you are most interested in. If more then an hour last then probably not worth it.

Hi, I'm new to the group and to this city and I have a mobile game that I'd like to have developed. I'm not a programmer, I'm a Technical Recruiter and artist. One of my sketches sort of came to life and it occurred to me that it would make a great game. I have an endorsement with an engineer that offered to make the prototype for 10k-20k. I am hoping to meet people that would be interested in this project and I'd like to learn more about the technical side to see what I can and cannot do. Is this the right meeting for that?

You can certainly try to find someone to work with from this group. This meetup has all sorts of talent in it. Mostly developers. I can't really answer this question for you. You can definitely network and possible find some interested people.

FYI: I posted the materials for Sat's workshop at: http://www.bhecker.com/workshops/phonegap.html

This will give you a preview of what I will cover. I am counting on WIFI access. :)

I'm going to cover the PhoneGap install and usage techniques and preview easy and intermediate app examples. I can't teach HTML and JavaScript along with all of this in three hours. :) Instead I'm going to focus on essentials and provide you with resources so you can learn more on your own.

Hi Barbara, Are these just so we know what you will cover or we need to install anything?

      June 19

    • Barbara H.

It's just a preview of the info I will be going over. You don't need to install anything before hand.

Do you have to have knowledge of HTML and JavaScript programming to get anything from this workshop? I am a mobile developer more familiar with native Android (Java) and C#/Unity (cross-platform tool). I don't know much about HTML or JavaScript yet.

    June 16

    • Barbara H.

You don't need to know much. I will be talking about javascript and html during the workshop. You might learn something new about working with these technologies and how they can be used for app development.

    Hi, Barbara,

I have registered the awesome workshop. Do you have some preparation guide? SDK, document, etc...

    June 15

    • Barbara H.

I'm going to go over everything during the workshop. If there is anything I think you should do ahead of time, I will post it to this message board and meetup by Wed. Just bring a computer and you will be just fine.

Do we need to bring laptop with any SDK installed before this class? In short, what do we need to bring to the class?

    June 14

    • Barbara H.

You will get more out of the workshop if you bring a laptop. You can also just show, watch and listen. I will be running through app development techniques for PhoneGap and you will be able to download and build some sample projects if you bring a laptop. You can use a Windows PC or a Mac.

Hi Barbara , Is this going to be a talk or a handholding session at the end of which all participants would have the development environment setup and a "hello world" app ready?
    Thank You

When will it be offered again? I have a busy Sat already planned and was thinking of trying to fit this in. If it happened again soon I might bow out and go for the next one.

      June 13

    • Barbara H.

Yes, I'm not exactly sure when but I will be offering it again.

    Hi Barbara,
I am an individual with no software background but have some good app ideas and would like to learn more about this so perhaps I can get into the app business. Would this be helpful for someone like me?

    May 19, 2014

    • Barbara H.

The workshop would give you an idea of how difficult or easy it might be to use HTML web development skills to program apps. The workshop is all about PhoneGap and web or 3rd party tools to build apps instead of using native programming techniques. It's an introduction level so it might just give you enough to decide if you want to invest time in using these sorts of tools.
