This is a meetup that focuses on learning and practicing the spoken dialect(s) of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan. Native or experienced speakers are welcome to come and help or get some conversation practice, and others are welcome to come and learn. ًWe are using the downloadable textbook Syrian Colloquial Arabic as a companion to this meetup, but it is not required.
We'll start by speaking in Arabic so we can practice what we know. Come prepared with five sentences to speak from memory, at least. Use some new verbs if you were here last week! If you already speak pretty good Arabic, prepare sentences on a new topic for you, so you can stretch your vocabulary. (If you don't know any Arabic, don't worry. You are still welcome to attend!)
Last week, we tried something different and focused on grammar and conjugating verbs. My (Laurel's) explanations were a little rough, but with the help of the generous native speakers who attended, everyone got a good feel for how to conjugate verbs in present tense. (Thanks, guys!)
This week, we'll do more work with our list of common verbs. (I will send you verbs to conjugate for our verb sheet if you were here last week and RSVP for the meetup.) Specifics on this TBD, but we'll have a good plan.
Don't forget to listen to plenty of Arabic in your spare time! Immerse yourself!
