This is a meetup that focuses on practicing the spoken dialect(s) of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan. The goal is to support one another in learning and improving, not to offer a comprehensive Arabic class. Native or experienced speakers are welcome to come and help or get some conversation practice, and others are welcome to come and learn. ًLaurel recommends using the downloadable textbook Syrian Colloquial Arabic as a companion to this meetup, but it is not required.
This week we have decided to focus on verb conjugations. We will use the first three verbs from the Verb List and a chart of conjugations (thanks Alex and Mays!) to verbally practice asking and answering basic questions using these verbs, past and present tense:
1. To ask سأل
2. To be كان
3. To be able to قدر
Please prepare a sentence, in past and present tense, with each of these verbs. Also, please print the chart of conjugations for your reference. If you need help with pronunciation, check out this sound file in which a Lebanese native speaker reads the verb list for us.
We may sing نا عجوزتي a children's song. I made a rudimentary recording of it (download audio here) (download document here).
Don't forget to listen to plenty of Arabic in your spare time! Immerse yourself!
