Please read this whole event before calling me with questions. Lake Powell Ski Boat Aramada Fishing, Scuba Diving Camping Trip You're invited to a fun-filled weekend of sunning, swimming, skiing and fishing at Lake Powell. The weather will be cooling off, but the water will still be perfect for swimming. If you like to fish do not pass up this opportunity. We catch fish all day long, including stripers, catfish, small mouth bass and lots of sunfish. If you have never been to Lake Powell, imagine what it would be like to fill up the Grand Canyon with water. The water is deep and crystal clear. The shoreline is sandy beaches and the canyon walls are the same red rock structures as you find in the Grand Canyon. Click here to see last year's pictures! Since no one could afford the houseboat, we are currently seeking boat owners that want to carry 4-5 people and their camping gear around Lake Powell for the weekend. The cost for the trip is $25 plus gas/oil for the boats. We will assign people to ski boats, gather their contact information and then share it with everyone that will be riding in the ski boat together. Each day we will break camp and move to a different secret cove with a sandy beach. Pack light so it will be easy to move. You'll need a tent, sleeping bag and ice chest full of food and drinks. So far, we have 6 big ski boats going, but have 3 maybes from other boat owners. If you know someone with a boat and want to invite them to attend this event, tell them we will pay all gas/oil expenses for travel related to moving people from one campsite to another on our scheduled trip segments. Boat captains will need to provide me receipts on a daily basis. I will enter them into a log and give the receipts back. No reciepts equals no reimbursement. I don't care what happened to the receipt. We DO NOT pay gas money for renegade captains that want to stray from the armada and do their own thing. We will plan a couple of day trips that will cost riders a little bit extra if they want to go on that day's event. Money for each trip will be negotiated by each boat captain. At the end of the trip, I will add up the costs and the group will split them evenly among all passengers. If there is room, I highly encourage scuba divers to bring their gear. This lake has fantastic visibility, but bring a wet suit if you have one. After about 40 ft. the water gets very cold. The coves are usually warmer and more conducive to diving without a wet suit. If you plan to bring kids or pets, make sure they stay in your presence for the entire trip. We will not serve as babysitter while you are out playing around on the lake. In addition to big ski boats, we could use a couple of pontoon boats to carry the bulk of the camping gear. The number of people we can take depends on the number of dependable boats we have to serve as water taxis. Here are the boat captains so far: The plan is to meet at 9:00 am on Friday morning at the boat ramp near Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona. We will spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the lake and return sometime late Sunday afternoon. The drive takes about 5 hours. I plan on leaving Friday morning at 4:00 am. Lake Powell Fishing Report Early this week the entire northern and middle lake went quiet. True to form stripers in the south took up the slack. But today boils were back at Bullfrog and bigger and better. Many anglers took 40 or more stripers from hour-long, acre-wide boils in Slick Rock Canyon, Halls buoy field and Tapestry Wall. The general boiling pattern prevails. Stripers hit the surface just as the first ray of sunlight peaks over the eastern horizon. Most of the action is centered near the main channel as shad have returned to open water. Shad size is larger now forcing stripers to work harder to drive them to surface and keep them corralled for feeding purposes. This makes stripers more aggressive, which equates to more fish caught if the lure hits reasonably near a fresh splash ring. Get on the water early for best success. The first hour of daylight is critical. Single stripers splash constantly during the magic hour. Hit the ring - catch the fish. Usually a big school joins up and feeds for 15 minutes before breaking down into single splashes once more. Feeding sometimes ends one hour after it begins but some days feeding is extended for two hours or more. Always as the sun gets higher in the sky, boils become more random and unpredictable. A huge boil could erupt at anytime, anyplace and last for an extended period. But these mid day boils are unpredictable. It is best to go on with the recreation plan for the day and just keep a rod ready in case of "emergencies" Afternoon boils are not as likely as the summer wind pattern tends to blow them away. On a rare calm afternoon it is a good bet to look for boils in the portion of the lake where boils were found in the morning. Lure choice is wide ranging. It is more important to throw a long accurate cast than to have the right color lure. I prefer big floating stick baits that cast a mile and have stout hooks. There is less lure maintenance with this outfit. It is not necessary to change plastic lure bodies with the hard plastic bait. After a good morning of boils it is necessary to change bent hooks and replace broken split rings. If using light line it is only necessary to restock the tackle box to replace lost lures. Striper size is increasing daily. They started the year at about 2.5 pounds and now are close to 4 pounds and 23 inches long. They are strong and thick bodied. The fillets are excellent and perhaps the best I have ever seen. This is a year to remember for striper fishing. The good news - It will only get better as water temperatures continue to cool. Cost: $25.00 |

Each hunter will be given a hunting journal form to fill out. You will be asked to take digital photos of the stock tanks as well as any other signs you discover and take written notes about the areas you scout. We will take all the information and build a 6a Hunting Journal. Everyone that scouts their assigned areas will get access to all of the hunting reports that are filled out. On this call we will show you how to use a free satellite scouting website that will allow you to scout any hunt unit in Arizona from your home personal computer. We will show you how to find the spot where we will be camping this weekend as well how to identify great places to scout for this weekend's scouting trip. I will email the teleconference number to everyone that RSVPs yes to this event. Click here to RSVP yes right now so you don't forget. On Friday night we will hold a one hour topographic map diagramming class. Feel free to bring topo maps of the area you plan to hunt. We will teach you how to diagram a topographic map and make educated guesses on potential areas that might be holding animals as well as identify possible travel corridors. At the end of the meeting, we will assign each hunter 3-5 stock tanks to scout, fill out your hunting journal forms and take pictures of sign, scat, rubs, etc. If you want to learn how to hunt, this is the best possible way to learn the technical skills and strategies for locating animals. If you want to get competitive, we can all put $5 buck in the pot and have a digital hunting contest. Biggest buck or bull elk wins. On Saturday morning everyone will go out at daybreak to their assigned stock tanks and begin scouting and recording information. We will be scouting for elk, deer and turkey. On both Friday and Saturday night, we can sit around the campfire and tell stories about your favorite hunting places, hunt units and successful hunting trips you've had in the past. This is way my Granddad and Dad taught me to hunt. Listening to experienced hunters tell stories is a great way to learn. The more people we get to scout, the better the chances for uncovering where the largest herds are eating, drinking and bedding down. |
