DIAL M FOR MURDER (Alfred Hitchcock, 1953)

Join us for this rare screening of Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder in its original 3D format.

"Throughout his long and distinguished career, Alfred Hitchcock loved to experiment, so it was hardly surprising that he responded to the challenge of 3D, and in so doing made one of the most imaginative films in the then new format. One of the director’s many studies of a marriage troubled by suspicion, illicit desire and greed, this adaptation of Frederick Knott’s play sees ex-tennis champion Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) planning the perfect murder of his wealthy wife Margot (Grace Kelly) by ‘persuading’ a down-at-heel former university friend to do the job on his behalf. But the best laid plans may go awry... The movie is probably most notable for Hitchcock’s precise, never gratuitous compositions (shot by the great Robert Burks, and especially impressive in this glistening new restoration) and for his skill in setting the film within a single room without making us feel the absence of the outside world. It also benefits from superlative casting: Kelly (in the first of her three appearances for Hitch) cool, glamorous and vulnerable, Milland suave but shifty, Robert Cummings as Margot’s faintly unappealing old flame and (retained from the stage hit, and widely underrated) John Williams as a canny investigating officer and Anthony Dawson as the seedy reluctant killer. The director himself? Keep your eyes peeled!" - Geoff Andrew

I've just seen on Twitter that the BFI is closed "until further notice" because of a power failure. I guess it's a question of "check before you set out!
