Wadjda (dir. Haifaa al-Mansour, 2012)

Join us for the 4pm screening of this acclaimed Saudi film.

"The first full-length feature film to be shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, Wadjda tells
the story of a young girl who lives with her mother. All Wadjda wants is the
freedom to ride around town on her bike, but the older she gets the more
religious and societal codes make her life restrictive. Hatching a plan to
raise money for the bike, Wadjda risks incurring the anger of those around her." - Renoir Cinema.

We’ll meet on the ground floor just inside the entrance.  If enough people sign up, we may be able to get tickets on the day at a special discount price.  You can also book online at http://www.curzoncinemas.com/films/details/1756/wadjda/ if you would rather book in advance.

In case of difficulty finding us, my number is[masked] 9995.

Look forward to seeing you there –

Sarah

A thought provoking film with a lightness of touch which served to emphasize the serious underlying message in terms of the repression of women and the confusion resulting from the rigidness of a society which doesn't allow girls to ride bicycles. Her mother thought she would lose her virginity, fertility or both (similar misconceptions arise in our own society ironically in terms of riding horses! However women are not banned from riding here - an essential difference). I thought the position of men in that society was sensitively portrayed.
We discussed the brainwashing that takes place in the girls education with the rigid structure imposed on them to preserve their 'purity' and the teacher who identified with the girl as she was like her at that age. She however had been sucked into the cultural expectations of her society.
A heartening ending with her mother getting the bike for her.
Four of us went for a lovely meal with good company and discussion.

Apologies, but I think I am jinxed; every time I plan to come some boring bit of domestic tedium gets in the way. I am sorry to everyone for changing at short notice. Riad
