Join us for a screening of Derek Jarman's acclaimed portrait of the artist at the National Gallery.
Hugely significant to the celebrated director Derek Jarman, his biopic of the Italian Baroque painter was developed over many years. Ultimately shot on 35mm film, it looks exquisite: the tableaux and sets have painterly depth, brightness and colour.
Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton deliver fine performances as the model and partner caught up in a complex – and fatally doomed – love triangle with the famous artist, as Caravaggio struggles to reconcile the demands of authority with his own artistic and sexual needs; a tension then very close to Jarman's heart. The screening will be introduced by Christopher Hobbs, the film's Production Designer and personal friend of Director Derek Jarman. It is held in the Sainsbury Wing Theatre.
It's now 20 years since Jarman's untimely death. If this film whets your appetite, the BFI is running a complete retrospective of his works.
