Caravaggio: Bacchus in Chiaroscuro*
*chiaroscuro - Italian “chiaro” - light and “scuro” - dark
an art technique of using dramatic contract between light and shade.
Michaelangelo Caravaggio was born in Milan, Italy in 1571 and he was active in Rome, Malta and Naples. Having moved to Rome at the age of 20, he became an apprentice to one of the artists trained by Titian. At the time Rome required many artists to work on a wide variety of projects from churches and cathedrals to the palazzos of nobility. Caravaggio masterly used dramatic effects of light and shade and he is considered to be a founder of the art movement called tenebrism – when artists use the lack of gradation between light and shade to increase a dramatic effect of the scene. The artist excelled at religious scenes painted for the Catholic Church; his virtuosity and natural portrayal of human expressions in Martyrdom of St Matthew propelled him to fame and would have secured his future....if not for his excessive love of wine and bad temper. In spite of having powerful patrons, Caravaggio was jailed several times and finally the Pope issued him a death warrant... (Please join to discover more!)
