First Annual Linville Challenge - rim to rim

  • Apr 13, 2013 · 8:45 AM

Last year I challenged myself and others to a crazy hike in the heart of Linville. The hike was one of the toughest hikes I have completed. The stories from that hike are oft retold. Since then I have toyed with the idea of doing something similar and sharing the brutal experience with other dedicated hikers.

The 1st Annual Linville Challenge

We will start at Conley Cove

Cross River - Possibly ford it

Continue up Table Rock trail

Peak Table Rock

Finish at the Chimneys and retrace our steps

Total mileage: ~12 Miles

Rating: Strenuous x2; be prepared for minor rock climbing, potential water crossings, and rough trails.

Our planned route will have us ascend/descend the gorge twice.

Elevation gain: 1,600ft x 2 = 3,200ft round trip

Required: The usual

Food and snacks

Water - I suggest around 2 liters

Hiking boots - Tough terrain calls for boots

Rain gear - I don't cancel due to rain

Gas money for drivers

Recommended:

Hiking Poles

Water shoes - Potential river crossing

Those wanting to meet at the trailhead should meeting us at the first parking lot on old NC 105. NC 105 is a dirt road located off highway 183. Please map this location beforehand. Also plan to be at the parking lot by 9:50

    Hi Dave,
I will be meeting you at trail head as well, as I'm traveling from Mooresville. Need street name or directions as well. Thank-you.

    Dave,
I don't quite understand about fording the river. Isn't there a footbridge at the trail leading up to Table Rock?

    April 10, 2013

    • Dave '.

We won't ford the river. I was originally interested in doing it just to add to the trip.

    Great, looking forward to it.

I would be carried out of the gorge on a stretcher if I did this....maybe air evac.

Just for any interested parties, I train 2-3 times per week on steep hills. I would be happy to share my training regimen with any interested parties. I use it for approach hikes in the Cascades. The training focuses on ascending steep hills on trails or rough terrain.

Hey David- I'd love to know a little about your elevation training- where do you go, and what distance/elevation gain do you do at each?

      April 4, 2013

    • Lilian

The narrows hike off of Big Hungry rd. is close to home for me, and I've thought about doing that 1-2x a week after work (you know that steep down/up?)

I'm considering this hike. I am excited for a challenge, but wondering if your pace will be too fast for me. Any other factors I should consider to determine if it will be too demanding for me?

    March 27, 2013

    • David L.

Good question! I can clear 800 feet in 20 minutes. I hope that will work. What is the mileage vs. elevation gain?

      March 27, 2013

    • David L.

Sounds fun. I will sign up when available.

      March 28, 2013

  • David L.

Is the rock climbing class III or higher?

    March 27, 2013

    • Dave '.

I was referring to possible bouldering and rock hopping. Nothing more than class ll.

      March 28, 2013

  • Dave '.

You should be comfortable on 15 mile hike if you want to attempt this hike. Also we will keep a moderate pace I am not looking to run the trails. I like to take time and enjoy the views.

Hm, thanks for the input. Sounds like I might not be a good match for this hike.

    This sounds up my alley.
