Little East Fork, Grassy Cove to Shining Rock (Strenuous) ~ 11 miles

We will meet at 8:30 am in the Ingles parking lot and do introductions and arrange how we will be carpooling to the trailhead. Let's try to squeeze in as few cars as possible, since there is limited parking at the trailhead. We will leave promptly at 8:45 am. We should be at the trailhead around 9:45am.

Make sure if you are carpooling, that you bring $$cash$$ for the driver!!

Highlights:
Near: Shining Rock Wilderness
Scenery: 4 Stars
Distance: About 11-12 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 2,600 ft (not sure about this)
Hike Time: 6 hours--should be back at Ingles about 4:30 - 5 pm
Difficulty: Difficult
Trail Condition: Well maintained trail
HikeType: Loop

Let's do a challenging hike in the Shining Rock Wilderness. We will start at the Big East Fork trailhead off 276 and take the Little East Fork and Grassy Cove trails to Shining Rock Gap then take the Old Butt trail back to the trailhead.

We will keep a good pace so please be sure of your hiking ablities. If you have not recently hiked 10 or more miles you should not consider going on this hike.

Directions to trail head: Take the Blue Ridge Parkway south from Asheville past Mt. Pisgah to Wagon Road Gap and take 276 (west) to the Big East Fork trailhead (about 2 miles on the left).

This is a dog friendly hike, as long as your dog is friendly!!

A very nice day with perfect weather. A tough trail made it a challenging workout too. Thanks Forest for organizing.

This was a fantastic hike. A small group of us had a very nice time and saw some great scenery. At 12.8 miles it was a little longer than expected but still a great hike. Here is the link for the trail info: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/283035304

Great hike, great group. I'm exhausted, the dogs are exhausted, I may never leave the couch again. Thanks to Forest and Griffing for leading and for everyone being patient with my lack of speed.

This is crazy, little over a days notice and now i move from the penalty box ( i mean, wait list) to booked with a closed RSVP list?!
if there is so much emphasis on showing up and avoiding no shows, there should be just as much courtesy for those booked to a hike to drop out earlier and resolve the final hiking group at least a couple days before the hike. I already made alternate plans, now I don't know what I am going to do.

    • Ginger

Hey Steve, maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you're still able to take yourself off of the list even though the RSVPs are "closed" by clicking that little green "change rsvp" box. But as far as not knowing what you should do, you should cancel your alternate plans of course because no matter what they are, going on this hike is going to be way better!

Not that easy Ginger. That is my point exactly,... I can't just break my other plans now. Last minute changes are bound to happen, but it puts people in a bind (by the looks of it I'm not the only one with this issue) when you sit for a week or as a wait lister hoping to get in and pretty much write it off to only find out a day ahead that you're IN. I would have loved this hike, but these last minute changes don't work for me... I've got another friend counting on me now...Bummer.

Sorry Debra, I thought I had. I guess it has to be done from this page.

    Thank you.

    March 9, 2013

  • Debra

John, if you're not going on the hike, please change your RSVP to "not attending". That way another person that is on the wait list will be able to go.
    Thanks.

So sorry to miss out. I had been really looking forward to it. Enjoy the day!

Since I was on the waiting list I reserved a spot on another hike, so I will stick with that hike. I hope to hike with y'all again soon though! Have fun!

Unfortunately this heel needs more time out of my boots.

    Enjoy!

Took a bad fall at Cataloochee yesterday. Don't think my back wants to hike. Have fun, y'all!

Glenn/Forest ~ I have a suggestion that will resolve the issue. I've developed a nasty heel blister and resting it would be the wise choice. I was going to slap moleskin and duct tape on it but you've given me a good reason to try something completely out of character, ie, do something smart for a change, and let this heal. Glenn, this will keep you in the group and Forest you can keep the number to 10.

And I'll just sit home and pout...

    Enjoy,

    John

A great hike, this one, no question ! Thanks ....

      March 7, 2013

I meant only that I think we ought to take only 10, because Shining Rock IS a wilderness area. I'm comfortable to dropping out with that in mind.

    • Forest D.

      Hi Glenn,

      March 7, 2013

    • Forest D.

I just closed RSVPs so let's see if anyone drops before Sunday.

      March 7, 2013

  • Glenn C

We have 11 people and stretches of this are restricted to 10. I'll drop out, but only to reduce the count. Not if the waiting list means the count will stay 11.

    March 7, 2013

    • Forest D.

I added an extra, you don't need to drop.

      March 7, 2013

It looks like we will have to drive to Canton to pick up 276 since the Parkway is likely to be closed. Not really a problem.

    March 5, 2013

    • Glenn C

But that's the most efficient route regardless, isn't it?

      March 5, 2013

    Looking forward to this!

I'm hoping more hikes are added in March. How is it around the arboretum this time of year?

Remember it's daylight saving time; we'll be losing an hour.
