Porters Creek Trail, GSMNP

This is a 4 mile round trip hike in the Greenbrier section of the Smokies. It is an easy/moderate hike that involves multiple creek crossings that have bridges (including one of my favorite log bridges!). The trail is loaded with attractions. There are several old buildings, an old cemetery, wildflowers (hopefully beginning) and ends with a waterfall. Fern Branch falls is not a spectacular waterfall but it has its charms and will be a good spot to stop for lunch before turning back. Because of all the points of interest, this will be a casual hike with plenty of time for picture taking.
The departure time is early because this is a popular trail and the parking gets packed. We will meet up, assemble car pools and depart within 15 minutes of gathering time so please be on time.

*Bring camera, lunch/snack, water.
*Sorry, dogs not allowed in GSMNP.:-(
*We will carpool so remember to help out drivers with gas $.
*Drive time is approximately 1:30.

I'm seeing a link, above, to a map showing where Ingles parking lot; is there a map showing where the trail is?

This trail is 1 hr 30 min drive from the Ingles parking lot? Not sure what "round trip" means in this context; is the total length of the hike 4 miles?

Any idea what time we expect to be back in Asheville?

I would say by 2:30 or 3:00 bu that is more a guess than an idea.

Funny typo there, Richard. How about dogs...are THEY allowed?

Thanks for catching it. Where's spell check when you need it?

      April 8, 2013

    • Ginger

Spell check wouldn't have helped here since it's a real word meaning "deep sound of a large bell" and "unit of Vietnamese currency" in addition to its popular slang usage. All of which are probably allowed in the Smokies.
