Pink Beds Loop in Pisgah - Moderate 5 mile hike

  • May 19, 2013 · 9:00 AM

We will leave the Ingles no later than 9:15am after meeting and greeting and arranging how we should carpool.   We should arrive at the Pink Beds Parking area by 10am.

Pink Beds Loop Hike Synopsis

This hike loops you around a unique, flat, high-elevation valley. You'll see rare mountain bogs, including glimpses of some rare and endangered species of plants if you're lucky. You'll pass through a forest in transition, as beavers have dammed the South Fork Mills River to form their ponds, which are drowing out the trees. You'll also find crystal clear brooks, wildlife meadows, and scenic fern-filled woods. This forest is one of the first to ever be managed through modern forestry techniques, earning it the nickname "The Cradle of Forestry in America."

Hike Description

This relatively flat loop takes you through several interesting areas in the Pink Beds valley. Named for the profusion of pink wildflowers that grow here in the spring (including mountain laurel and rhododendron), this relatively flat valley sits at a high-elevation (about 3200'). It also contains some very large pine trees, rare mountain bogs, streams with beaver dams, clear babbling brooks, and scenic open woods.

Tracey, Ken & Baxer Trio led an excellent hike again!!!!! They could even dodge the rain and
13 happy and congenial group of people and 4 lovable pups had a very good time. Thank you all for the fun hike. The newly constructed boardwalk is a great addition to Pink Beds trail.

because there's still a chance of t-storms in the forecast, i'm regretfully backing out... hopefully next weekend, tho!

Weather seems iffy. Thunderstorms worrisome. "A couple of showers and a heavy t-storm; warmer; storms will be slow moving and bring heavy rain."

I know, for me too. But at 11am in Brevard the rain chances drop to 10%...why can't this rain hold off until Monday??!!

      May 19, 2013

  • Michelle Whittaker

I live right by the Ingles on Long Shoal and we are having a torrential downpour. If it keeps up, I will not hike today. Sorry.

    May 19, 2013

    • Tracey R.

I understand, just please change your RSVP if you are not going to make it. Thanks!

      May 19, 2013

  • Tracey R.

Hey Everyone, the chances of rain and storms are about 45% at 10am which is when we should get to the trailhead. I still plan on going at this moment. But if you are not comfortable with the chance of storms, or the thought of hiking in the rain, please change your RSVP. We'll do this hike again.

I didn't think I was going to make it off the wait list so I've already made other plans. Sorry! I can't wait to join the group on future hikes.

Rain chances are at 60% now. Please keep your RSVP's up to date. If you have a change of plans for Sunday, change your RSVP as soon as possible to allow others to have the time to make it to the hike.

Thank you all! See you soon!!

New to the group, I am on the waiting list for this hike and would love to do more of this length. I did Pink Beds two years ago and the ferns here are just amazing.

If your hike ends early and you're not ready to head back to AVL, there is a Garbage Jam from 11am-10 pm at 185 King Street to raise awareness about, and support against, a Biomass company trying to open near Brevard. Many bands, chili cookoff, silent auction and I'm sure Oskar Blues beer will be flowing freely. $10 to get in.

Thanks Kim. I may be up for that.

Hey, I forgot to add if you plan to drive, make sure your car has gas, and if you ride with someone, make sure to bring $$ to give them for gas. See you soon!

    May 15, 2013

  • Kelley

I would like to join, but I've never been on a hike with this group before.

    May 14, 2013

    • Tracey R.

Hi Kelly, this is a pretty good "starter" hike with the group. We meet at Ingles, you'll see a group start to form, do some introductions, then figure out how to get everyone in the cars to go to the trailhead. Once there, we start the hike. People walk and talk and take photos. If you have hiking shoes, those would be better than sneakers. Bring water and snacks. This hike will probably only take at the most 2 hours. The travel to and back will be about 45 minutes each way. If you plan on riding with someone to the trailhead, make sure to bring a few dollars to chip in for gas! Hope we see you there.
